Washington (CNN)Republican Party leaders and prominent senators are sharpening their knives against Ted Cruz, expressing growing alarm over his candidacy as he continues to mount a serious threat in Iowa.
In interviews with CNN, a growing number of Republicans are beginning to echo remarks made by the likes of former Sen. Bob Dole and Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad, warning that the party would suffer deep losses down the ticket and risk electing a Democratic president if the Texas senator wins the nomination.
"I think we'll lose if he's our nominee," said Orrin Hatch, the most senior Republican in the Senate...

Riiight. A TEA Party golden boy as the candidate, asking the people for a TEA Party House and senate so he can get things done... Yeah, that'll go nowhere.
It's the GOPe that'll be losing down-ticket... and power in both houses... Cruz in office, with coattails, means they're done, and they know it.
There is no way to know now, but Kennedy barely beat Nixon in 1960 and almost certainly won only through widespread Democrat voter fraud, particularly in Illinois and Texas (both of which Kennedy carried by razor thin margins, well under the margin of fraud).
If Algore had lost by similar margins and with similar evidence of widespread voter fraud, the 2000 election would still be tied up in the courts.
What’s what Bob Dole says too?
Well, ya know what? Cruz is right about that. The GROPe would lose. (But, when he or Trump wins the president, will the GROPe senators fight HIM, or will they cave in and behave like the good little party hacks that they are?
Would it not be predictable? The repubbies win the House, win the presidency, win the governor races, win the Senate ... and find that the conservative agenda can't get past the senators because of repubic opposition?
Dede Scozzafava call your office ........
Things like this will help Cruz.
if you’re stupid.
It’s hopeless =)
McTurtle’s Revenge.
4th grade response, but then again that is how Trump responds as well.
Did you have that same opinion back in June and July when Trump was the guy taking truckloads of heat for his stand on illegal immigration and The Wall?
And why was Cruz silently standing by?
“Dishonest beats crazy.” - Lindsey Graham.
Just WOW! The guy has just lost it mentally. How did our SC brethren elect him?
He is the most principled candidate and if there is anything those 534 scum bags cannot stand is somebody with principles. They cannot control him nor convince him to compromise on his principles. There is no grey area with Cruz, it is either right or wrong and I always thought that is the type of person we wanted, no somebody to go along to get along.
Also Goldwater did not have the support of the “Country Club Republicans”, the GOPeers of their day.
Dole, Branstad and Hatch are morons.
Remember Mississippi.
That was not precisely the same circumstance, although it had some of the same elements. Most importantly, it was before the media and establishment realized that the electorate had made a tectonic shift in its view of the media, its role in elections, and in their understanding that the establishment reaches across party lines.
I expected those attacks were just business as usual for the media and the Rats for politically correct attacks designed to hound someone out of the race. I totally loved it when the attacks slid off Trump because it told me something about the state of mind of the electorate. . . Trump was just being Trump - I don’t believe he was babbling his stream of consciousness thoughts - I think his stump points were far more researched and calculated.
The difference now is that the GOPe has made the judgment that Trump is the lesser of two evils. Knowing Trump, he has cut a back room deal to call off the dogs for something in exchange if he is elected. If so, depending on the deal, that makes him part of the corruption problem, unless he gives them some of their own medicine and reneges on the deal.
Trump is on Cruz because he is his toughest political rival. The Rats and GOPe are on Cruz because he is the biggest threat to their cozy, corrupt set up.
If nominated, I’ll vote for Trump. But remember this: Trump is for Trump. He is running on the basis that he is too rich to be bought - I hope that is true, but his history shows that he has been part of the corruption game. . . if elected, I hope he can and will clean it up. I believe the fate of our nation’s future hangs in the balance.
Why did Cruz silently stand by? He probably thought like me and many others that Trump would make a gaffe that would disqualify him. It does not make sense to go all in with a rival candidate whose monumental gaffe would disqualify Cruz also. The name of the game at that time was to build your organization, survive to fight another day, and differentiate yourself from your rivals. His silence was neither a character flaw nor evidence of weakness. It was not smart to fight a very risky battle Trump was winning. A for me, I loved Trump’s stand on illegal immigration and building the wall. . . makes perfect sense if you goals is to protect and enhance the well-being of the citizens. That is clearly not the goal of the Rats and GOPe.
All these guys are a bunch on spoiled babies. Only a few short weeks ago it was Trump who was going to flush the party down the drain- now its Cruz. The only reason they now like Trump is the deal has been made with the GOPe that they can continue to hold all the powerful party position when he is elected. Cruz on the other hand will boot them all starting with the liar McConnell.
Cruz is making the right enemies.
