Everyone wants to support American vets and when you hear about the great work Wounded Warriors Project does for our own American vets, well, ⦠you just canât fight the urge to dig deep and give to support the cause. But who/what are you really supporting? Not so much the vetsâ¦.
DC Clothesline: In the first version of this article, I used the 2012-2013 Wounded Warrior Project 990 Tax Forms. This updated version is using the 2013-2014 Wounded Warrior Project 990 Tax Forms. (Thank you, David Isakson, for all of your assistance) I had made some errors in my original reporting; I am not a forensic accountant and had misread some of the figures or gotten the figures from the wrong columns. I will not be making those mistakes again. The 2012-2013 and the 2013-2014 tax forms are hyperlinked, so feel free to peruse the documents for yourselves. We should not be surprised to find out that yet another âcharityâ claiming to âhelpâ Veterans is more interested in the salaries of their executives and funding the vicious cycle of advertisementâ¦raise fundsâ¦spend it on advertisementâ¦raise fundsâ¦ad nauseum. But just the raw figures from their own reporting:

“Absolutely everything seems to be a scam anymore. Itâs infuriating.”
If you want to help someone, donate to him/her directly.
There are some good charities (like Salvation Army), but many of the better knowns I don’t trust (like United Way, and anyone trying to “cure hunger” in America - talk about a scam.)
Lol
I stopped contributing to United Way when I discovered how much money was being passed along to Planned Parenthood.
When I read that WWP legally assaulted organizations that had WW in a portion of their name or used any kind of similar silhouette, I wrote WWP off as a self-serving group.
My contributions go to the Gary Sinise Foundation.
“There are some good charities (like Salvation Army)”
The Salvation Army is A1! I think the guy at the top takes something like $11k per year. Nearly all the money they raise goes to help, not into the pockets of the “helpers.” Most charities are money-making schemes for those who run them. The United Way is the biggest scam of them all. As far as WW is concerned, Trace Adkins should be ashamed of himself making their commercials. Some days I end up thinking this country is really rotten from top to bottom!
I hear you. But there are two charities that I still trust, the Salvation Army and the Little Sisters of the Poor. I'm sure there are other good ones as well, but those two are tops with me.
4 am bump - Didn’t they support gun-grabbing legislation or some such?
Wasn’t there big blow up a few years ago during Sandy Hook about them dissing Gun Groups?
Ditto.
Thank you for the post. Many need to know this.
When the maintenance and growth of any charity becomes more important than its original stated mission, it has gone the way of all flesh - and its real purpose is over. (Applies to many churches).
It may continue on the grand picture, but it is only an empty shell, serving the ends and goals of the men or women who run it.

Well said.
In contrast, some other veterans' organizations are faithful and accountable.
For one, the Disabled American Veterans orgaization sequesters only about 4 to 5% of its income for both executive salaries and materials, whereas the rest goes to the veterans--particularly those on disability--and programs that serve them. You can check the web for comparisons of the various organizations. DAV is one of the best, and their locally-obtained donations serve local veterans.

Sadly this is true of TOO MANY charities. I’m not going to comment on WWP directly because I haven’t read into it. If you want to help a veteran, find one and help them! They aren’t difficult to find. You might even make a friend which is worth more than the money you are willing to part with.
I did look at WW on Charity Navigator a year or so ago and true at that time only 60% of every dollar they receive actually went to help our veterans, BUT they were far and away the group that spent the most on our veterans. You could add up all the rest and not even come close.
