After more than six months of the 2016 campaign, with more than a dozen Republican candidates total in the race at one time, and with the campaign of Trump coming as a shock and nasty surprise to secular humanists in the U.S. and around the world, who have been pulling for Jeb Bush, John Kasich and Lindsey Graham to get the nomination, the Republican race seems to be coming down to a contest between Ted Cruz and Trump. And as we know, both tend to appeal to evangelical Christian voters, and for a long time didn't go after each other, until lately, after Cruz started rising in the polls, and video surfaced of him attacking Trump at a big donor event.
So some questions to consider since we're in 2016, and the first primary voting is to take place soon:
Does it ultimately help or hurt that Cruz and Trump are now attacking each other as they are? It seems like at times they're using DNC and liberal media talking points to do so. Should they be attacking each other as they? I don't think so, myself.
Are they two very different candidates, despite appealing to many of the same voters, or are they maybe more similar than they appear? Despite Cruz being ostensibly the more Christian and conservative candidate, questions have been raised about him in both areas. Is Trump actually Christian and conservative, or a liberal.
Has Trump's campaign been a help or a hindrance to the Republican party?
Does the "birther" issue with Ted Cruz really matter, meaning that it has Constitutional legs not just in Constitutional law circles but actually should be a significant question in the race, and will the Democrats really make an issue of it, as Trump claims? I believe no to both.
Do you think it has come down to the nominee being either Cruz or Trump at this point? And who would be the better candidate, or do you see it as a "lesser of two evils" choice?

Trump for 8 years followed by Cruz for 8 years.
Cruz or lose. I don’t vote for evil anymore. I’ve been doing that for 20 years and my party has moved so far left that I can’t stomach it anymore. Trump is the most liberal of all the Republicans left. They’re just not as good at playing lip service to disparate groups with itching ears.

Of course questions have been raised. Trump can’t compete with Cruz in those areas, but they are important to Trump’s supporters. So his only option is to sling mud and try to make people question Cruz’s bona fides.
This year, national sovereignty is the primary issue. That means Trump and Cruz are the only two candidates.
I prefer Cruz, I consider him to be the best candidate we’ve had in decades. In addition to being good on sovereignty issues, he is a constitutionalist from the words “go”.
Trump is not solid on constitutional issues, he is a pragmatist which means he’ll do whatever seems right to him at the moment. Which means he will be a constant headache over the next 8 years if he is the eventual winner.
But he is solid on national sovereignty issues, the border, trade, he isn’t likely to open the border to a million Syrians. So he is my second choice.
It does bother me to see Trump going after Cruz on stupid things, such as his supposed “nastiness”. Coming from Trump, of course, thats actually funny. I do hope the two of them will keep the nastiness within decent limits, since they may well be working together for the next 8 years; whatever they say now they may have to walk back later.

The fact that is sticking speaks more to the fact that there is indeed something to distrust about Cruz, vs. just “flinging mud”.
Clearly if it weren’t working, it wouldn’t be causing such a commotion from Cruz supporters.
Cruz or will lose. Whether he wins the primary or not.
