Putin is the closest thing to a friend Israel has ever had in Moscow

Analysis: Israel and Russia share a common fear of terrorism, and in 2014 Putin was one of the few world leaders to support Operation Protective Edge and was in 2005 the first Russian president to visit Israel.

Love him or hate him, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s military intervention in Syria unquestionably upended Middle Eastern politics. Putin supported Syrian President Bashar Assad, established several military bases in Syria, created a de-facto Russian-Shi’ite axis, confronted Turkey and forced the West to re-engage with him.

While all the region’s major players feel the influence of Russia’s military campaign, one country overlooked by commentators analyzing Russia’s Syrian campaign is Israel. Israel’s interests vis-à-vis Russia run wide and deep and are impossible for Jerusalem to ignore.

.........

With the emergence of Putin, though, Israel found the closest thing to a friend it’s ever had in Moscow. Israel and Russia share a common fear of terrorism, and in 2014 Putin was one of the few world leaders to support Operation Protective Edge against Hamas, saying “I support Israel’s battle that is intended to keep its citizens protected.” In 2005, Putin became the first Russian president to ever visit Israel, visiting the Western Wall — Judaism’s holiest site — as well as Israel’s Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial, where Putin observed a moment of silence. The Russian president even reportedly purchased an apartment in Tel Aviv for his then-84-year-old Jewish German teacher. Putin returned to Israel in 2012 as the guest of honor at a state dinner and to inaugurate a monument to the Red Army soldiers who defeated Hitler in World War Two.

Putin is smart.

The Soviet Union appealed to the Left. Putin has shifted course and has embraced the Right.

In the end, it’s not about ideology, it’s about opportunism.

A good foil to the president of the USA being the biggest enemy to Israel since Hitler.

Or Putin is embracing what he thinks works and ditching what did not work - same thing Red China did back when it emerged from the failure of Mao's system.

Same thing happened in post Revolutionary France and even when Cromwell died they brought back a resemblance of the old monarchical system. There is no "conspiracy" to trick the right on Putin's part. With the failure of the Soviet revolution Russia returns to its conservative/reactionary roots.

Putin is not stupid. He wants in on the recently discovered immensely huge off shore gas field in Israeli territory. The closest and biggest market for it is western Europe which Putin already supplies thru his pipelines.

A smart move by both Russia and Israel. Russia needs the gas and money and Israel needs a friend, especially on that like to sell military materiale. Something Obama has been squeezing Israel on.

Putin is creating a Syrian/Iranian/Russian alliance in the middle east...and by Iranian, I mean Hezbollah, as in the Iranian funded Hezbollah that is fighting shoulder to shoulder with Russia in Syria...the same Hezbollah that terrorizes Israel.

I think Israel appreciates the stabilizing influence Russia could have in the mid-east, in the wake of all the US sponsored chaos in Syria, Egypt, and Libya...but I’m sure they will be careful about how cozy they get with their new friend.

“I cannot forecast to you the action of Russia. It is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma; but perhaps there is a key. That key is Russian national interest.” - Churchill

Still as true today as it was then.

Obama is a Muzzie, his brother is a bigshot in the Muslim Brotherhood. Obamas administration has about 100 Muslim Brotherhood members working for the administration, even though the Brotherhood is on the Terrorist list.

Obama has treated our Israeli ally worse than even Jimmy Carter, Israeli polls show he is very unpopular. Obama put Israel in the crosshairs of the Iranian nukes and missiles.

Obama is letting Putin sell Iran missile defense that will prevent Israel from retaliating against Irans nuclear ICBM’s.

We all have seen Obama sending money and political operatives to defeat BiBi. Obama sent money to get out the Arab vote against BIBI.

Putin is no good for Israel , but next to Obama he at least has treated Bibi with respect, and has not organized BDS against Israel.
