Not only do we now pay for bottled water, we also pay for air to put in our tires and bags of dirt and fertilizer for our plants. Rather strange to pay for things which used to and should still be free.
“And they charge $1.73 for a 12 oz bottle of tap water”
In San Antonio, gas is cheaper than a bottle of water.
“Lots of places here in CA that are still above $3.”
I’d like to know where! I am buying Regular for $2.19 in the Bay Area. Sure some of the majors in “trendy areas” are still as high as $2.70, but you have to wonder who’s buying from them. I guess the rich are either stupid, or they don’t care.
That's funny. Here in Iowa we see horses and cows whenever we leave town yet we still point out the interesting or cute ones.
Houghton Lake, Michigan. I once spent a year there for three weeks.
It was under $1.00 in my area in 2000.
Here in Bakersfield, several of the Chevron stations are near or above $2.99. The stations out of town on I-5 are all north of $3. I have no problem buying here around $2.25.

Yeah, I-5 has always been like that, but I am surprised that prices are up in Bakersfield. I mean, Bakersfield is in the oil-producing region of California. Just shows you how predatory the oil companies are. I see them “jinking” prices almost on a daily basis trying to squeeze every penny out of the consumers that they can.
Bakersfield prices have always been higher than other areas and doesn’t make sense given our oil economy here. Typically, I can fuel up say, the Palm Springs area for $.25 to $.50/ per gallon less. Go figure.
air compressors are not free.
I know air compressors are not free but many years ago when I went to the filing station the young man who checked my tires and filled them as needed did not charge my anything. Now I have to check and fill my tires, check my own oil and pump my own gas. Really miss full service lanes.
Also who thought there would ever be a market for canned air? Interesting how times have changed.
Lucky you ... a one time limited area deal. I mean nationally which we may get to if oil falls to $10barrel.
In 2000? No, it was not. National average for gas in December 2000 was $1.09. Lots of places were selling gas for under a dollar a gallon.
Places near you but not in most states - not NJ, WI, NY, WA, OR, CA, AK states I was in that year. Every where I went prices were no lower than $1.50, and usually much higher - national average is a misleading figure state by state in actually prices. As I recall WY was extremely low bringing the national average way down.
Last time the national average was $0.75 was in the 60s or there abouts.
$2.65 near Los Angeles thanks to the $1 in taxes from the state.
In the early and late 90's the price was under $1.00 almost ever where. Except California which has stupidly high taxes and so brings up the national average.
Well you certainly are not harmless ... thanks for the insult.
That you regard a historical fact is an insult is neither interesting or surprising.
