The prospect of running for re-election with Donald Trump at the top of the Republican ticket was worrying some party lawmakers as they huddled for an annual retreat, where a few forecast trouble if Trump becomes the party's presidential nominee.
"Heaven help us," Representative Peter Roskam said when asked about it by a reporter. But the Illinois Republican quickly added, "I'm not going to comment on the presidential candidates at this point."
That reticence was shared by many lawmakers asked about running on Trump's coattails during an event in Baltimore where Senate and House of Representatives Republicans gathered to talk through their priorities for a coming year whose highlight is the November election. Some were not reluctant to express concerns.
Trump would not help Republicans if he topped the ticket, despite his appeal to Americans fed up with politicians, said Representative Justin Amash, a favorite of the conservative Tea Party movement who has endorsed Kentucky Republican Senator Rand Paul for president.
"He does appeal to the anger," Amash said of Trump, the outspoken real estate mogul who is front-runner to be the party's presidential nominee.
But he said Trump's "policy prescriptions will take us in the wrong direction, and it won't be long before many of those people are angry at him and angry at Republicans again."
The idea of Trump capturing the Republican nomination seemed highly unlikely just months ago, but it was sinking in as an actual possibility this week across the Republican Party.
In addition to voting for a new president, Americans will elect members of the Senate and the House on Nov. 8. In U.S. politics, a party's presidential nominee has a big impact on the campaigns of candidates for both chambers of Congress.

I guess a lot of Republicans don’t want to make America great again.
All the establishment knows how to do is retreat. Maybe they should give taking a stand, fighting back when attacked, and refusing to apologize or step back, that seems to have worked quite well for Trump.
We’ve had enough of the spineless, apologizing, rolling over and playing dead candidates like Dole, McCain and Romney.
Basically islamist facilitators all.
Would they more worried about getting back to Constitutional principles.
Their owners in the unitard party told them to diss the outsider/frontrunner.
Frikken RINOs are quaking in their boots about the Big Broom coming to town. He’s gonna sweep their no good rotten carcasses out the door, and it’s scaring the pants off them.
Serves ‘em right for not doing what we sent them to Congress to do.
One more case of Party power deviating away from TRUMP kicking in doors on treasonous caving, rampant neutrality towards Obama’s every dream issue, and general dereliction of duty captured on the record of their cave-per-day tenure in Congress.
“But the Illinois Republican quickly added,”
Who knew Illinois had anything that remotely resembles even the worst the GOPe has to offer. I won’t go into what I’m thinking what a Peter Roskam actually is!
My anger extends to my Congressman - Pete Olson - and Senator - John Cornyn. Didn’t vote for either of them last time around and don’t intend to do so when they are up for re-election. Both are aware that many of their constituents do not support them but they don’t seem to care or acknowledge any concerns at all about the positions they take even when we talk to them in person, other than to say that we do not understand what they face in Washington.
Wow!
It’s bigger than a Billy Graham crusade.
It’s bigger than a Rolling Stones tour.
I think the Pope would draw a bigger crowd...but I’m not certain.
To get that many people to a Jeb! rally they would have to be driven in at gunpoint :-)
Hey! It should be called “The No Apologies Tour”
:-)
Where’s Johnny? Cornyn is Mr. Invisible.

Unless Trump has the dope on all these GOPe, it makes no sense that they are going to war against the most popular candidate since Reagan. These attacks are seriously historic and histrionic.
Republicans are eunuchs who are waiting for sex reassignment surgery.
Hear it comes. If the establishment POS figure Trump is going to win then they will select seats to lose in the house and senate giving control over to the rats. They have done it before.
Of course they don’t....if they did care, they wouldn’t keep rolling over for everything Obama wants.
I guess that there will be less GOP RINOS and cowards in their seats this Fall when they are voted out in primaries.
