Alex Jaffe reports at NBC:
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. â Among conservatives, Donald Trump can typically do no wrong â until he attacks Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX).
On Saturday, Trump drew boos from a grassroots conservative crowd during remarks at the South Carolina Tea Party Coalition Convention for his attack on Cruzâs previously undisclosed loans.
âYou give a campaign contribution to Ted Cruz, you get whatever the hell you want,â he said, before boos erupted from the crowd.
Trump went on as the boos grew louder: âSay whatever you want, itâs okay, he didnât report his bank loans. Heâs got bank loans from Goldman Sachs, heâs got bank loans from Citibank, folks, and then he acts like Robin Hood?â
One man in the crowd, 71-year-old Air Force veteran Joe Bates, stood up and shouted angrily, wagging his finger at the candidate.
Trump continued: âYou know, say whatever you want, but it doesnât work that way.â
It was a stark illustration of the political perils the two candidates face in attacking each other as they sprint toward the early primary contests. Each risks losing ground among conservatives that havenât yet made up their minds between the two candidates, or inflaming their opponentâs base against them.
With that in mind, Cruz had, up until last week, carefully avoided taking on Trump directly.
But with two weeks till the high-profile Iowa caucuses, and the two candidates just points apart in most polls of Republicans there, this week the gloves came off â culminating in a number of explosive exchanges between the two at Thursdayâs debate over Cruzâs claim to U.S. citizenship and Trumpâs âNew York values.â

I have a growing sense that the two are going to be great friends after this is over, and that both are coming to understand it is a matter of competing political approaches more than something fundamentally personal. Both have a vision of benefit to America in mind, but are going at it from different angles and different backgrounds. This might actually be able to converge on something sane AND both be friends when it is over.
Cruz is that raw potato.
SMH
He’ll be Trump-fried by the time this is over with :-)
I watched the videoâpeople got up and clapped.Ya... They did that at the end of everybody's speech. You know. It's something that happens when the show is over. But if it makes you feel better. Go with it.
I was saying I wanted Sarah to come to Cruz defense. I think you got that but just in case I worded it badly, I was hoping Sarah would come out and back Cruz.
Thank you.
Not actually.
If the crowd does not like you, they don’t stand and applaud.
They sit and politely applaud—or sit on their hands.
Obviously, the few people in the crowd who did not like Trump’s remarks did not sway the whole crowd. And Trump did not back down from his opinion either.
But hey, whatever floats your boat.
Agree. You have to know the RNC/GOPe is loving this. Gives them an opportunity to try to slip that low energy guy by us.
Like I said... If that does it for you, go with it.
That’s not supposed to happen! You can’t do that to The Donald!
LOL
LoL. Yeah a few boo’ers out of hundreds, and Trump got a standing ovation in the end that was 60 seconds later.
I don’t know why they would boo for speaking the truth. Kinda strange of those people.
I do too. And even worse is the fighting on FR between supporters of Trump and supporters of Cruz although at least some who claim to support Cruz are appear to be disrupters. They do not say anything much in support of Cruz, just trash Trump, sometimes with lies. At this time, Trump and Cruz are the only two candidates I like.
My God. You do want Hillary for President. I am stunned that you are so naive to support this dude who can only get 30 percent of the general election vote....MAYBE.
been saying the same.
We have a couple of freepers no names mentioned who have derangement syndrome about the candidate against who they support.
The establishment is laughing like mad due to the fact that these idiots are doing the establishments bidding.
He was booed by North Carolina Jebbies at the Charleston debate
They were bused in per Rush
Trump gets booed a lot depending who’s in the audience
They all do
I think Trump Derangement Syndrome or Cruz Derangement Syndrome may be approaching the same decibel as the Thou Shal’t not Criticize Sarah Palin chorus 4 years
....nah.....that’s not possible....
Same playas here though to some degree......mean down and dirty polk salad eating spiteful folks
You are morally lost. So goeth the conservative movement.
You mean Presidential. Trump looks extremely Presidential. Cruz looks like an old man next to Trump......I still think Cruz is lying about his age. He looks 65 at least. But certainly doesn’t look Presidential.
