I have found that the site Replace smart quotes with regular straight quotes fixes the problem Free Republic recently has with quotes and dashes. For example, a New York Times article As Germany Welcomes Migrants, Sexual Attacks in Cologne Point to a New Reality that when originally pasted looks like this:
COLOGNE, Germany â In early December, the Cologne police made their New Yearâs Eve preparations. Drawing on the previous yearâs experience, they identified their biggest worry as pickpocketing and fireworks among the crowds. So they increased their holiday deployment, to 142 from 88, concentrating on the banks of the Rhine River, where revelers traditionally gather for a giant fireworks display.
As 2016 neared on Dec. 31, however, some 1,500 men, including some newly arrived asylum seekers and many other immigrants, had instead assembled around Cologneâs train station. Drunk and dismissive of the police, they took advantage of an overwhelmed force to sexually assault and rob hundreds of people, according to police reports, shocking Germany and stoking anxieties over absorbing refugees across Europe.
âWe were just pressed on all sides by people,â recalled one victim, Johanna, 18, who agreed to speak by telephone from Lake Constance, Germany, where she lives, only if her last name was not used, fearing hostility, particularly over social media. âI was grabbed continually. I have never experienced such a thing in any German city.â

COLOGNE, Germany -- In early December, the Cologne police made their New Year's Eve preparations. Drawing on the previous year's experience, they identified their biggest worry as pickpocketing and fireworks among the crowds. UTF-16 and -32 suck to work with. You don’t get null bytes in UTF-8!
I honestly can’t understand why this site is still broken. I’d have fired the developer long ago and replaced him.
It’s not hard—if the first bit is set, it’s a multibyte character.
I considered donating my time; however, I’ve done some calculations (posted here for critique) and the running costs for this site appear to me to be advertised as much higher than they should be. I do donate time, but am not going to do it if FR’s web dev is sitting around doing nothing while getting paid.
Although critical reaction was initially mixed, "Bohemian Rhapsody" remains one of Queen's most popular songs and is frequently placed on modern lists of the greatest songs of all time.
Why can’t we get a system fix on this?
You’re kidding, right? This is the only site on the web where we have to go to that much trouble to quote even another FR post? No, for the donations we should receive legibly typed posts. I am no coding expert but surely there are some around here who could fix it. If the donations are for upkeep, I think it should be covered. If they need extra because this is a super bad problem, please let us know and we will give extra just to have that fixed. I love FR and it would be worth it.
..Straight quotes?? Thats homophobic...
Homophonetic?
