The conservative media's civil war over Ted Cruz 'birtherism'
Washington Post ^ | 01/14/2016 | By Callum Borchers

If you thought some in the conservative media lost their minds over President Obama's birth certificate, you were right. But the current brouhaha over Ted Cruz's place of birth -- in which Donald Trump reprises his role as chief instigator -- might be even more compelling, in its own way, because of the civil war it has sparked on the right side of the press.

Sadly, there is no way that Ted Cruz can continue running in the Republican Primary unless he can erase doubt on eligibility. Dems will sue!

-- Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 13, 2016

Witness this week's heated exchange on MSNBC (of all places) between conservative provocateur Ann Coulter and Republican media strategist Liz Mair. Coulter insisted that Cruz -- born in Canada but a U.S. citizen from the moment he left the womb, thanks to his mother's citizenship -- is not eligible to be president. Mair asserted with equal force that Cruz is eligible and at one point charged that Coulter is "in no way conservative." Card revoked!

(Coulter is an ardent supporter of Trump, the GOP presidential front-runner; Mair heads the anti-Trump super PAC Make America Awesome.)

And Coulter -- for those keeping score -- has changed her position on this subject. That's awfully convenient, since no one would stand to gain more from Cruz's disqualification than Coulter's favorite candidate.

Mitt Romney was born in Detroit, Michigan.

He didn't disclose his Canadian citizenship (which he did not renounce until 2014), which is allegedly fraud according to the FEC.

That's interesting. I didn't realize that, thanks!

— Is it possible for a Natural Born Citizen to be a Dual Citizen at birth? —

Not when the law is properly read. A person is a NBC of 1 or zero nations. A person who is NBC of zero nations is born a citizen of at least one nation, and maybe of two.

Granted, I’m not very bright, but your answer is confusing..please clarify..thanks.

The funny thing is, trump is the Establishment, though second or third tier.

Yes, but don’t tell the Trumpkins.

If you tell them Trump is the Establishment, they’ll claim you’re GOPe.

Given that he never went back to Canada after he was four years old, I fail to see your point. It is as if he had retained Cuban citizenship. But malice will always find someway to make a small mole into a deformity.

Nobody knows for a fact that he was a U.S. citizen from the “time he left his mother’s womb”. That doesn’t happen automatically, and we’ve yet to see the documentation that it did.

From a citizenship standpoint, it is automatic. There are no supporting documents required.

The argument is not about that. The argument is about whether Cruz inherited his mother's natural born status as well as citizenship.

I am one who sides with the understanding that it did.

‘The funny thing is, trump is the Establishment, though second or third tier.’

Your comment is at odds with the facts. Haley, chosen rep of the GOPe to deliver the SOTU so-called rebuttal, singled Trump and only Trump out for criticism.

HE was NOT born in the country, so his citizenship cannot be equal to hers. It is merely derived from it.

Right! Well said.

Yet another brilliant observation to point out the simple, "self-evident" truth of "natural born citizen" as originally understood, implied and its meaning intended, to fellow souls living in a world where self-evident truths aren't at all self-evident any more. Well done!

I've read that in these times, "we can only see as far as we can see."

I still don't fully get what that means, but your post, and, more curiously the need for your post, are helping me to understand what that might mean and see why it's true.

Your vision, however, seems to be very clear. Thanks for sharing what you see!

Disapproval is not malice. Whether he returned to Canada is irrelevant. We have Mexican nationals here who have lived her 25, 40, 60 years. They didn’t morph into US citizens because of the passage of time. As far as I know, it doesn’t work that way in any country.

If his father was still a citizen of Cuba, Ted may have Cuban citizenship for all we know. It turns out the whole thing appears to be very shady. At some point, there are probably some people who will become intrigued & inquisitive.
He- & probably his father, needs to clear this up.

ps According to a roommate- at Princeton, I think, he & Cruz went back & forth to Canada a number of times. Cruz expressed concern over his Canadian- & possibly US citizenship (I don’t recall, exactly) because of it. Which, unfortunately, put the lie to his having ‘’forgotten about it’’ & that’s why he didn’t renounce until 2014.

The trouble with killing messengers is that it can become like a game of Whack-a-Mole. Better to clear things up & be honest. Viola! No more ‘’messengers’’ to kill.

So when he was doing it, he wasn`t buying influence! He was, what, simply establishing his 'talking points' for his future as a politician? And of course years after the fact, when he believes he can score points in that bid, he`s just being honest about, what, talking points about bribery of corrupt politicians by the corrupt business people who buy their influence? And of course that doesn`t make he one of those corrupt business men, right?

Can a person be NBC of two countries? No.

Is that clear?

You are going beyond saying that Cruz is not a natural born citizen to saying he is not a citizen? Throw everything against the wall and hope something sticks?
Why not just let the voters decide? Back in 1928 many people voted against Al Smith on the grounds that as a Catholic he owed allegiance to the pope as a foreign sovereign. That went against the prohibition of a religious test in the Constitution, but nothing to prohibit them from deciding to vote against Smith because of their qualms.

Different factions of the uniparty grinding their respective axes. trump is running because in spite of is father’s money, in spite of his Ivy graduation, he never made it into the big leagues of the Establishment. He doesn’t reguarly get invited to Warren (Buffett) and Bill’s (Gates) poker game (Katherine Graham used to go, too).

He’s always been the son of the German guy, Fred. (His father used to pretend he was Swedish). This is his way to bust in to the top tier of the Establishment. Once he wins, then HE’LL have the best poker game in town. With nancy, and harry, and paul, and mitch all joining him. Everyone but the taxpayer.

Fox. Henhouse.

Cruz has two big problems with the natural birth challenge and
the loan from goldman sachs and his globalism ideology, in general. Still, he’s a million times better than the uniparty.

But notice how much enjoyment the drive bys get in seeing conservatives turned against one another in the contest between Trump and Cruz. They want us weak (angry and divided) going
into the election. I am not doing it. Although I support
Trump because I think he stands the best chance in the general election, I don’t despise Cruz in any way. We best not feed their blood lust or we will end up with Jeb, Rubio, Hellery and the Sandman.

Not true. That depends on the laws of the two countries. The United States does not acknowledge dual citizenship but other countries do.

If you believe what you wrote...there are no words.

I can only hope you were weaving an unhinged theory in hopes someone would buy it.

Otherwise, sad; just sad.

Both Trump and Cruz will be hounded unmercifully by the media and the Democrats, and don’t expect our establishment elites to come to their rescue either.
