Donald Trump says Ted Cruz should leave the presidential race

WASHINGTON— Donald Trump stepped up his attack on Sen Ted Cruz’s eligibility to run for president Wednesday calling for Cruz to drop out of the race.

Donald J Trump
@realDonaldTrump
"Sadly, there is no way that Ted Cruz can continue running in the Republican Primary unless he can erase doubt on eligibility. Dems will sue!"

Trump recently warned the GOP that if Cruz becomes the nominee ,the party would be risking the White House. Trump claims Democrats would hold up the election in court, litigating whether or not Cruz is considered a natural born citizen.

Trump’s views on Cruz’s eligibility have changed throughout the campaign.

The first time he was asked about Cruz’s Canadian birth in 2013, Trump, the loudest ‘birther’ questioning the legitimacy of President Barack Obama citizenship, wasn’t sure if Cruz was qualified. Trump was still not convinced last March, months before announcing his own bid for president. By September, Trump said he was confident Cruz had the legal standing to run.

There is no real question that Cruz is a citizen. The question of qualification is purely a question of law. Does Cruz's being born in Canada preclude his taking of the office.

He meets all the conditions for US citizenship, as stated by an Act of Congress.

Trump ,as the only one “concerned” who has standing should file a suit.

Trump knows that if it gets down to a 2 man race Cruz will evicerate him in debates.

10 min of generalizations works ok when a dozen people are on the stage splitting the time. When 2-3 people are on the stage Trump is hosed when he has to be detailed and specific. He didn’t even know what the nuclear Triad is. That is the tip of the iceberg of his ignorance.

So he need to try to bully Cruz to quit.

When he loses Iowa his bluster about being a winner and poll dominance is greatly diminished. He has a big ego like Obama and an equally thin skin.

The rest of the reasons are political. Mud slinging is a tricky and risky craft, sometimes the mud comes back, sometimes it makes your opponent stronger.

Mud or tar....

The Tar Baby said nothing. Brer Fox curled up into a ball to hide his laugher. His plan was working perfectly!

"Are you deaf or just rude?" demanded Brer Rabbit, losing his temper. "I can't stand folks that are stuck up! You take off that hat and say 'Howdy-do' or I'm going to give you such a lickin'!"

The Tar Baby just sat in the middle of the road looking as cute as a button and saying nothing at all. Brer Fox rolled over and over under the bushes, fit to bust because he didn't dare laugh out loud.

"I'll learn ya!" Brer Rabbit yelled. He took a swing at the cute little Tar Baby and his paw got stuck in the tar.

"Lemme go or I'll hit you again," shouted Brer Rabbit.

The Tar Baby, she said nothing.

As long as Cruz leaves his flank exposed, he’s going to take fire.

People’s varying opinions on this subject really do not matter.

What matters is if someone is granted standing to sue, and a court renders an opinion on it. THAT opinion will matter.

And if it is an unfavorable opinion at an inopportune time, guess what?

So the question is are voters willing to move forward with a person who has a lingering question over him, or are they willing to move forward with a person who does not have that lingering question?

That’s about where this thing is, and like I said, if he continues to leave his flank exposed, he’s going to continue to take fire, and I don’t think it matters how mad Cruz supporters get, or how mad Levin gets, or whatever else.

It’s up to Cruz to make sure his resume is in order.

I’ll repost the following (from post 41 above) since you may not have read that (and you CERTAINLY don’t understand the issue of “standing”).

Well, I’m sure that the Trumpster’s lawyers have told Trump that he DOES have standing to sue if he wished.

I’m also sure that they made Trump aware that Cruz would NOT be granted standing because he (Cruz) hasn’t been prohibited/barred from being on ANY state’s ballots for the primary.

Of course, Trump wants this as an issue so he would never sue and risk the near certain outcome—a summary judgement that Ted Cruz was a citizen at birth and not later naturalized.

Whenever I think my opinion of Trump cannot get any lower, he does something else to lower it.

I hope this ends the delusion here that Trump & Cruz have been working together all along.

"Why would he do it?"

To really settle the question he claims to worry about not being settled. Of course if he's only talking about it for political gain then he wouldn't do it.

...and Trump is the bad boy we all like

Not me. I despise the slimy liberal d-bag. But then, I'm consistent. I always dislike liberals because they're destroying my country.

Your opinion matters to you. And same goes for every person who has to ponder the question.

When I say the question is easy to resolve, I figure that some people will resolve it one way, and others, the other way. But it's 100% correctly resolved for each individual, even though others disagree.

I see the risk to Cruz as vote erosion, not formal disqualification by some mystic authority. And it's probably better to resolve it without consulting the mystic authority. Whichever way the mystic goes is just going to cost it credibility, because some people will see the decision as incorrect.

Either Cruz stands up to Trump and shows he has the stomach for a fight or the chosen Democrat and the press will destroy him after he gets nominated.

There are only two viable GOP candidates: Trump and Cruz. We know that the others will fold and be left in a bloody heap before the general.

Trump has donated money to the Clintons and he thinks Cruz should drop out? right.

Trump reeks of desperation.

Trump is certainly not desperate. He is out front by a wide margin and has a huge lead over Cruz. I think Trump just enjoys belittling opponents.

BINGO ... Bears repeating. Trump (or, at least, his political advisors) know that what you are saying is true. Tick, tock, tick, tock, tick tock...the grandfather clock is ticking away and a reckoning is coming for Trump.

Your timeline shows Reagan was a Dem a few years before he ran for elective office as a GOPer. Hardly different than Trump.

Yes, at this point in time, there is even a question as to whether Cruz is a citizen. Did his mother become a Canadian citizen? Did she file paperwork to affirm his birth as a child of an American citizen? Who knows - you only have Cruz’s word for what is or is not.

Well let's say Cruz does win the nomination. What will the Dims do? Will they make it an issue? Will they sue as Trump says? Would it go to the Supreme Court? How would the Court rule? And what would happen if he were found to be ineligible? How would a new nominee be selected?

If Cruz wins the nomination then Trump can sue but it will be dismissed on lack of standing. The only Democrat who would have standing do sue is party nominee. And they will have standing only after they lose the election. So regardless, the suit cannot take place until Cruz has been elected president. And if, for the sake of argument, he is found unqualified then the vice-president would become president. But if there is a suit and if it isn't thrown out of court then the almost certain verdict would be Cruz is eligible.

Still pretending like the Democrats “dont care”, huh?
