MANILA (Reuters) - The Philippines has offered the United States eight bases where it can build facilities to store equipment and supplies under a new security deal, a military spokesman said on Wednesday, amid rising tension with China over the South China Sea.

Last year, the Philippines and the United States signed the Enhanced Defence Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) granting Washington increased military presence in its former colony, rotating ships and planes for humanitarian and maritime security operations.

"The list has been prepared many months ago when we had earlier discussions," Colonel Restituto Padilla told reporters, saying five military airfields, two naval bases and a jungle training camp were offered to the United States.

PI has offered to return Clark AFB and Subic Bay Navel Base.

Plus 4 other airfields and another port.

The Chinese are not pleased we are sooo close to their private lake...

"China's official Xinhua news agency, in an English-language commentary, said the EDCA would only escalate tension and "could push the situation to the brink of war".

Back to the PI again, I am sure that a lot of FReepers have interesting stories from being there in the past, I wonder how much the place changed after we left.

Was at Cubi Pt in ‘84 for six weeks. Apart from the liver damage when you begin complaining about the price of a $7 airstart it’s time to leave.

The only way Obama will take them up on this is if they allow their people to vote in American elections.

The Philippine people understood what closing those bases would do to their economy and security, but the government needed to get rid of the “colonial” devils.

They have abortion criminalized in their constitution, I doubt that’s what Obama wants.

I can’t help but laugh after reading this news.

I was working with a US semiconductor company in the late 80’s ( that was just after the fall of Marcos ), and all bluster from their local politicians is that they would not renew the base agreement after it expired in the early 90’s.

YANKEE GO HOME was the cry of a lot of college students ( many of who are now living and working in the USA ).

I used to get hostile stares when I jokingly added the phrase “AND TAKE ME WITH YOU” after I here the words YANKEE GO HOME.

Anyway, come 1991, the Subic Naval base and the Clark Air Base was about to be slowly winded down when nature accelerated the process. The volcano Mt. Pinatubo, which had been sleeping for hundreds of years erupted and spewed ashes all over the bases thus FORCING our folks to leave sooner than necessary.

And now, what goes around comes around — YANKEE COME BACK !!! HA HA HA.

"but the government needed to get rid of the “colonial” devils"

I went there dozens of times in the 70s and 80s.

I don't blame them. Embedded into their culture was the desire of every pretty girl to move to a base town, become a whore and hope to marry a GI.

It completely ravaged their society and culture.

I'm ashamed to have contributed.

I can only hope this time the PI government is prepared to suppress institutional prostitution and the sex slavery of 14yr old girls.

And close the bars by 2.

I didn’t say they became a state.

I said their people get to vote in our elections.

Would they vote Democrat? They seem to be a rather conservative society. I’m not an expert on the place.

Neither am I. Perhaps I’m wrong to think they would be susceptible to the Democrat siren song.

Was there for the volcaphoonquake washing ash off the frigate for 2 days straight and then a few weeks helping move military dependents and others down to Cebu.

After Clark finally closed my understanding is that within 24 hours fence jumpers had already gotten on base and started stripping all the copper out of the facility.

Last I heard was the base was far from operational within a short time frame.

With President Trump they’ll have to pay us to station troops there! That’ll be great!
