OTTUMWA--Former Arkansas Governor and Republican Presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee spoke to a jam-packed room of voters at Ottumwa's Country Kitchen restaurant Monday night.
"I have had a lot of political events here," said Country Kitchen owner Larry Zimmerman, "but this blows them all away."
The enthusiastic crowd may be evidence that the Huckabee campaign is gaining some momentum in the state he won in 2008. Although poll numbers still show Huckabee in the bottom half of the Republican field, Huckabee is confident that in-person campaign events such as this one, are the right path to an Iowa victory.
"If candidates discover they can simply spend their way to victory, that will be the end of the Iowa Caucus," said Huckabee.
Huckabee, who has already visited every county in the state during this campaign, is in the middle of an ambitious, 150 event tour of Iowa. It began January 2 and ends February 1, the day of the Iowa Caucus. Huckabee told the Country Kitchen crowd that it is their job to filter the field of candidates for the rest of the country.
"If you elevate a candidate that you feel is worthy, you have done your country a service," he said, "If you eliminate candidates you feel are unworthy, you have also done your country a service."
Although he never specifically named his opponents, Huckabee did try to help the crowd eliminate some of his Republican counterparts. He took aim at those who have never been in an executive role by comparing them to someone with no aviation experience flying an airplane.
"You would never risk putting your children or grandchildren on a plane with someone who had never piloted a jet," said Huckabee. "Why on earth would you have your children and grandchildren live in a country with a president who has never run anything?"
He then questioned those candidates who have neglected their current jobs to campaign for president.
"Would you ever even think to take a job for $174,000 a year, plus a pension and health insurance and then, immediately take time off to search for another job?" he asked.
With less than three weeks to go before caucus night, Huckabee has more than 100 additional campaign events on the schedule. Time will tell whether his aggressive face to face campaigning will be enough to overcome his big-spending rivals, but his campaign remains optimistic. According to a poll they conducted in late December, 75% of Iowa voters remain undecided and 58% say they aren't even leaning toward one particular candidate.
As for last night's crowd, they seem to have their minds made up. According to one campaign staffer, nearly everyone in attendance signed a pledge to caucus for Governor Huckabee.
Hint: his initials are TD.
LoL. I mean 'TC'
Huck’s Sell By Date was at least four years ago.
No, he’s toast. Needs to drop out. He’s done much better this time out though. Needs to replace BOR on Fox.
Anyone would be better.
Ted Cruz eclipsed Santorum and Huck with evangelicals.
Yeearrrghhhh!
ROTFLMAO
Jam-packed voters?
Was free toast being offered?
Huck should go back to Foxnews and forget this ever happened.
Maybe it was free Polident night.
That voter thing, dead on target.
What’s he hoping to gain there.
Doesn’t this sound like one of those B/W movie plots where an entertainer goes on a foreign tour hoping to creat enough buzz to spark his career back in the States?
If Huckabee does well again it’s time to get rid of Iowa as first in the nation. A small sect of voters has way too much sway.
And this extremely unfortunately posed family photo.
Now that’s a pretty bad photo.
What was with the kid, doing something like that?
I’d really worry about that guy.
While he was a boy scout, a stray dog had the misfortune of crossing his path during a scout outing.
There are many versions of the story, none of them absolving him of it doing it.
The dog was caught, hanged from a tree and its throat was slit.
Nice family.
Oh, I almost forgot.
They stoned it while it was dangling from the tree.
The throat slit was their “mercy” upon it.
Killing a beast for food is one thing. This sounds like a very twisted disrespect for another living animal.
That kind of person would be a high risk for a high crime IMO.
I sure wouldn’t want someone I cared about involved with him.
It does explain my unending disdain [polite understatement] for the whole Huckabee clan.
Comeback?
Mmmmmmmmmm..........nope!
And then daddy pardoned a killer who repaid the favor by killing a bunch of cops. If I did that or the stuff Hillary’s done, I’d take my money, keep my head down, and never be seen in public again. But, the shameless run for the highest profile office imaginable.
