Never before have I seen so many threads about a recently departed person.
Especially from a conservative board!
If anything else, I think it proves what an icon he was!

You could make the case that outside of Elvis he was the biggest icon of the rock era, in terms of solo artists.

It goes to show how big a part of our lives Bowie's music was - part of the "soundtrack of our lives", pardon the cliche. I've been listening to David Bowie since I was in grade school.
And two other factors:
1) The music he made back in the '70s still sounds fresh and innovative.
2) He was still making good music almost literally until the day he died.
