The Cologne Portent
WSJ ^ | 1/12/2016 | Bret Stephens

Posted on 01/12/2016 6:06:44 AM PST by Uncle Miltie

Among the hard lessons of our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, surely one of them is that it’s foolish to expect that backward and often barbaric societies can be transformed into functioning liberal democracies. So why do liberals seem so surprised that so many people from these societies behave in barbaric ways after they’ve shoved their way into the West?

As I write, 516 criminal complaints have been filed in Germany against men of mainly North African or Arab origin who went on a New Year’s Eve sexual-assault rampage in the city of Cologne.

... A 2013 Pew survey of Muslim views on women’s rights found that only 22% of Egyptians and 14% of Iraqis thought that women should have a right to divorce their husbands, while fully 92% of Moroccans and 87% of Palestinians thought a wife must always obey her husband.

Put bluntly, there is a pronounced tendency among Middle Eastern men to view women either as chattel or as whores.

...

No amount of vetting is going to find all the bad apples in the new wave of Middle Eastern refugees. So here’s my modest proposal, for Mr. Obama and Ms. Merkel. Let’s open our doors wide to women, young children and the elderly. And let’s close it shut to the men. They have a mess to clean up in their own countries. And much to prove in the horrifying wake of Cologne.

So the WSJ no longer believes these guys are going to be hard-working cheap labor?

They still like the “cheap” part. If they would slow down the raping and work like Mexicans, the WSJ would totally support them.

Some footnotes (since I live in Germany). The 600-plus charges that the cops now talk about? Once they enter court, the judges will look over flimsy evidence and limit witnesses (the women assaulted), then likely throw out more than half of the charges. Those who are convicted...likely will get no more than 30 days in jail. So the charges business simply makes the cops and the political figures look momentarily good...when the results in six months will be dismal.

The hard-working cheap labor talk? There are some individuals from Syria who have some university background and technical expertise. The Syrians however....only make up 40-percent of the 2015 1.1-million refugees. Out of this group...I’d take a reasonable guess that barely a 100,000 of the folks will have some training or education to fit into the system. The rest are either uneducated or doomed to be a taxi-driver (a dying trade at present).

The housing market is the biggest deal and will represent massive failure by mid-summer, as people progress out of the refugee centers with a visa. If you go to urban areas like Frankfurt or Hamburg....for a decade, they’ve been talking about a lack of reasonably-priced apartment rentals. Other than moving into the ghetto-region of each urban area and accepting some one-star apartment....there’s just not much in the affordable area. If you move out 40 miles miles....different story and more houses or apartments....but these refugees don’t have cars or licenses. You can’t make any formula work with the urban requirement as top priority for the new immigrants.

The Koln episode also brings up the topic of sexual assaults and if cops are not reporting facts. Someone from the police union got into a discussion last night on a state-run TV forum of statistics....that sexual assaults are no longer in a particular column. They fit under ‘bodily harm’, which is the same category for two guys who fight in a pub, or a couple of teens in a tussle at school. The same cop noted that it’s forbidden for cops to say ‘Roma’ for Gypsies....so they now refer to them as those who frequently change their place of residence.

All of this is leading Germans to ask more questions and the intellectual argument of them safeguarding the refugees...isn’t that compelling as it was a year ago. Three state elections occur in mid-March and there’s some feeling that the anti-immigration slant of the AfD Party might get 15-to-20 percent of the vote....taking a big slice off Merkel’s party.

That's as idiotic as our new phrases for illegal aliens and terrorism....

15-20%? That’s it?!?

Hopeless.

Guess I will never see the home of my ancestors. Sad.

How utterly naïve. Liberals don't care about how barbaric these people may be. The only thing Liberals care about is importing people who will vote for them. Liberals will continue to import them and they will continue to loot the treasury and their behalf in exchange for their votes to keep them in power.

Why do you think the immigrants selected Germany? The highest amount of gibmedats. And the immigrants will DEMAND more, and the Liberal politicians will give them more in the guise of "compassion". Ultimately they will be given the right to vote long after they have systemically influenced society on their own behalf.

The Tsarnaev brothers were cute little refugee kiddos.

Until they weren’t.

What you describe sounds like the whole problem/invasion being swept under the aahhrrgghhh and the Germans, most of them anyway, going along and doing as they're told by Frau Merkel.

Am I reading your remarks correctly?

Only Brett Stephens. He's probably contradicted by the Editorial Board in the same issue.

When you go back to late 2013, there was this enormous press coverage episode by state-run TV (both networks). If anyone came to suggest opposition...they were labeled Xenophobic.

Well...this went on til late 2014, when the Pegida and opposition groups started to appear. State-run TV in Germany went against them and tried to hint they were ‘stupid’. The Pegida guys invented a new term “lying press” which got picked up by the printed press and bloggers. It made the state-run TV guys upset.

In early 2015, state-run TV in Germany said that opposition to the immigration thing was just 10-percent. If so, why bother talking about this constantly?

I’d say by mid-2015...somewhere near 35-percent of the nation was either strongly against the immigration strategy or asking stupid questions which couldn’t be answered.

The push by arrivals got the number by the end of 2015 to 1.1 million, and I’d take a guess presently that near 50-percent of Germany isn’t buying the Merkel talk. The thing is....we haven’t had a single national or state election in at least fifteen months. So, there’s been no chance for the public to send a frustration vote back to Berlin.

There are probably forty different angles to the episode...making this way too complicated for the normal German to get a grasp on it. The state-run TV crowd have lost the trust of society (poll from summer of 2015 says only 40-percent believe what they say). The new word for 2015 is “Merkling”....which literally means that a politician or manager mostly talks about things, but never commits to really fixing them or resolving them. Oddly, even kids now use the word Merkling to describe teachers, bus-drivers, and adults that they run into.

There are so many agendas (real and fake) tied to this mess....that it’s more of an opera, than reality.

Merkling, I like it, I too seem to live in a world of “merklings”. I guess it is a kind way of saying liars, a world full of them!

"Let's open our doors wide to women, young children and the elderly."

So it's okay to be sexist, (exclude men), but not religionist, (exclude Muslims.)

When you have 10-year-old kids using Merkling in regular daily chatter....you just start laughing. Even they aren’t buying into the fake politics of this whole thing...doesn’t matter if it’s a school administration policy, some bus policy, or play-ground rules....they are becoming cynical of the system already at an early age.

Yeah. Since I no longer read the WSJ and won’t pay for it online, I wasn’t sure if this guy was on the editorial side of the paper.

You should read everything he writes. He’s great and frequently takes down Obama in the most skillful and devastating ways. Also very pro-Israel.
