As the federal land occupation hits day eight, locals visiting the besieged refuge find, "They're cowboys. They're one of us."
BURNS-Ore.--"He's coming," a man on horseback shouted, waving a large American flag against the glistening backdrop of the snow-covered Malheur National Wildlife Refuge.
"He" was Ammon Bundy, the leader of a group of armed protestors who occupied this federal refuge in southeastern Oregon for a week. Flanked by supporters, including his brother Ryan and spokesman LaVoy Finicum, Bundy made his way up the hill Friday to tell a swarm of reporters that he and his fellow occupiers were not planning to heed the sheriff's recent offer of a safe retreat from the town, at least not yet......
Yahoo News spent time with several locals visiting the refuge on Thursday and Friday.
On Thursday, Joe and Becky Kingen, ranchers from Fields, about 112 miles south of Burns, paid a visit with their kids, Monte, 11 and 7-year-old Riata. Monte, an enterprising sixth-grade journalist, was seeking an interview with the Bundys.....
Interviewing Ryan Bundy, young Monte Kingen asked, "What do you hope to accomplish" to which Bundy replied, "The best-case scenario, we hope to make it where you guys can ranch without the intrusion of the federal government. We want to be able to see you guys free."...
when Ammon Bundy returned to the refuge following a brief meeting with Harney County Sheriff David Ward, he was greeted by several local ranchers eating pizza around a campfire. Among them was Rich Sampson, whose property is adjacent to the wildlife refuge.
"We walked down that road, not knowing what we were walking into and spoke to these people," said Sampson..."We went home and told everybody in our community, "We're not frightened. They're cowboys. They're one of us.'"......

I'm not going to judge the tactics out there but there has been a "War on the West" coming out of Washington for the last 50 years at least and its looks like we're in a phase called "The Cowboys Resist".
The leftist media framework for dealing with this story depends on the narrative that the community doesn’t want them there. Vice talked to some ‘rancher’ who said, “the government does all of these nice things for us. If they left, how would we be able to continue getting all those great services?”
I saw the video on Vice of the negotiation with the Sheriff. He is an absolute snake.
Sheriff Dave Ward has become the ‘face of the authorities’ in this case where the trespassing and so on has taken place on federal government land and would be settled by the FBI in the end which I hope will not happen with all the potential for death or injury.
Ammon Bundy feels the sheriff is in his words ‘under pressure’ from the federal government.
My characterization of Sheriff Ward is that he is under the thumb of the federal government, sadly.
The ‘action’ takes place on land policed by the federal government 30 miles south of his town and he’s trying to make it sound like his town is being threatened by the ‘cowboys’ who are defending the rights of the ranchers to use the land.
When the folks from out of the area came in over the weekend, with long guns and vests etc. etc.. they were asked to leave the refuge and went to talk with local officials and the FBI seeking a peaceful resolution.
Is this what Sheriff Ward means when he talks about ‘intimidation of law enforcement’ and a ‘threat to the community’ and so on?
He’s probably under pressure from the fascists in Salem as well.
“As the federal land occupation hits day eight...”
Nope, no bias there. Federal land? Care to site that authority, Yahoo?
Oh, to have ONE news outlet that questions, cites and references instead of touting their own bias as ‘facts’!!
Good grief, IRS attacking citizens, Hillary and Bill's shenanigans, BLM, TSA, DHS, LMNOP....you name it, the oppressive nature of a federal behemoth and all her minions have Americans finally beginning to pay attention.
I haven’t read the speficics of Kate Brown’s comments but I sense she’s auditioning for the “Bull Connor Award” and the “George C. Wallace Commemorative Medal”.
There’s a new sign there now reading “Harney County Resource Center”.
