Texas Sen. Ted Cruz said Sunday he will win the presidency by “painting in bold colors, not pale pastels,” and that his passion for repealing Obamacare, establishing a flat tax and enforcing immigration law will be a contrast to the “mushy middle” that doomed GOP nominees in 1996, 2000 and 2012.
“What they did didn’t work,” Mr. Cruz told CNN’s State of the Union.
Mr. Cruz, Texas Republican, is leading in Iowa ahead of the Feb. 1 caucuses, even edging businessman Donald Trump by several points in recent polls despite the mogul’s big leads elsewhere and nationally.
The Texan said his appeal is based on his loyalty to conservative principles and the rule of law. He said voters are fed up with GOP leaders who have funded the Democratic agenda through recent spending bills and that Democrats have allowed President Obama to circumvent the law through executive action.
He said he would work with Congress to achieve his legislative agenda, including repeal of Obamacare. That means he can’t literally repeal the overhaul on “day one,” though he is making it his top priority.
“I intend to follow the law,” Mr. Cruz said.
He said the law is also clear on illegal immigration — it is illegal — and that he would deport unlawful residents through regular law enforcement channels and e-verify, a system that allows businesses to determine if their employers are eligible to work in the U.S.
He said his plan does not include Mr. Trump’s call to go “door to door” to root out illegal immigrants for deportation.
“We don’t live in a police state,” he said.

He said his plan does not include Mr. Trump’s call to go “door to door” to root out illegal immigrants for deportation.
“We don’t live in a police state,” he said.
Thank God he’s paving the way for Trump.
âI intend to follow the law,â Mr. Cruz said.
Well, yeah I would hope so. Good luck with getting the bought off RINOS in congress to go along with your legislative agenda Ted if you indeed become president.
In other words, business as usual. Meh.
We already have a force to deport illegals - it’s called ICE.
E-verify has proven to be a joke. There's workarounds for both the "employee" and the employer. Of course, if you are suspected of being a legitimate citizen they demand proof.
Does Senator Cruz realize how some people live, with the threats they face? We don't have time as a nation to be nice about removing invaders.
My gosh, this sounds like GWB did before the election.
My bet is this is the week Cruz takes DT out in the debate.
Ted wants illegals to stay.
His enforcement method would take 1000 years to deport the millions of
illegals. He sounds like a democrat.
Thank God for Trump.
Good , he is showing his colors now.
You describe excellent fantasies.
Last week he was trying to out-Trump Trump and deport forever. Now, not so much.
Sounds like Walker at the end.
It does sound like Walker, at the end.
If you lose, do you agree to shut up about DT?
It’s a good sign that he’s ‘moving to the center’ to attract moderates!
I don’t think immigration is the right issue though. Moderates want very strict immigration enforcement.
Going to illegal immigrants’ doors and taking them into custody is quite acceptable. As it is for any criminal.
So, let me get this straight. Cruz doesn’t agree with Trump’s “stroke of the pen” solution Immigration reform? Tracking down illegals and deporting them would be equal to our being a police state?
Then, in the News/Activism forum, on a thread titled Cruz dismisses Trumpâs âpolice stateâ plan on deportations, Isara boastfully posts the following quote from Cruz,
“Stop the lawlessness: Shut down President Obamaâs unconstitutional amnesty on day one. I will end the lawlessness with the stroke of a pen.”
And Cruz will implement this ending how? Talk about politispeak! Sheweeeeeee!
So, we’re to gather that Cruz’s “pen strokes on day one” would somehow be more effective than Trump’s. Okayyyyyyy!
Any executive action that Obama implemented with the stroke of a pen can be undone with the stroke of a pen. That Cruz will do on his first day in office. What Cruz will not do is unconstitutionally create new buearocracies to conduct massive immigration raids (which would violate the 4th Amendment rights of a whole bunch of citizens and legal permanent resident aiens) with the stroke of his pen.

Yes, please. Everyone should read Cruz’s plan. Then tell me where you’ve heard all of it before.
ICE needs to be about 3 times bigger just to deal with the criminal illegal aliens, 6 times bigger if we want to deport the rest.
If we show we are serious about enforcement, many will leave on their own.
