In Iowa, Trump intensifies ‘birther’ attack against Cruz
ABC ^ | 1/9/16 | Staff

Donald Trump intensified his criticism of Ted Cruz at two Iowa campaign rallies on Saturday, urging voters to reject the Texas senator by saying his Canadian birth raises serious questions about his eligibility to become president.

"He was born in Canada. I guess his parents voted in Canada," Trump said at an afternoon rally in Clear Lake. "So if you were born in Canada, immediately it's a little bit of a problem."

Trump added: "You cannot put somebody there that's gonna go in ... he's going to be immediately sued."

Earlier Saturday, Trump said at a rally in Ottumwa that Cruz "has to straighten out his problems," a veiled reference to the so-called "birther" issue. But he declined to elaborate further, saying, "We'll discuss that later."

Cruz, however, is a naturally-born U.S. citizen, and most legal experts agree that he is qualified to be commander-in-chief.

But recently, he has had to aggressively push back on questions pushed from Trump about his eligibility for the presidency. He renounced his dual Canadian citizenship in 2014, and on Friday, Cruz's campaign shared with the conservative website Breitbart a copy of his mother's birth certificate showing her born in the United States.

You just smoked your own argument about Trump’s mother.

Thanks for playing.

It's impossible for me to discern a single intelligent thought in there anywhere. Trump's mother has nothing to do with Canada and Canada has nothing to do with Trump's mother. It is very difficult for me to write this without insulting your ability to think straight.

Yeah, uh huh. and his own Harvard law professor says Cruz is wrong and it is NOT settled law. Lawrence Tribe stated on ABC Cruz was smart but inferred Obama was smarter.

Cruz parents were registered as Canadian voters.

Wrong. You really need to read the articles before running off at the mouth. First, the document that was posted was not a list of registered voters - it was a preliminary list of potential voters. The list was used to go door to door to determine if the people actually lived there, if the names were correct, and if they were eligible voters. As a US citizen, Ted's mother would not have been an eligible voter. The list was from 1974, so by that time Ted's father may have been a Canadian citizen.

Also, no proof is needed as to whether Ted's mother was a Canadian citizen when Ted was born. It was legally impossible for her to be a Canadian citizen in 1970. Ted's parents moved to Calgary in 1967 - Ted was born in 1970. You had to be a permanent resident for 5 years before you could even apply for citizenship in Canada at the time.

No there won’t be lawsuits against Trump. Nobody would be that stupid....except maybe you.

**************

Well, then, there will be at least one— He’d better get that declaratory judgment.

No one’s targeted Trump yet— but, he’s raising the issue, so surely Cruz people will — and Mark Levin already raised it.

Trump better show his mother’s bc to get this behind us.

You fail to address the fact that Canada is a dominion of Great Britain, not an independent country.

Funny how the Queen of England appears on the coins and stamps of Canada.

If Trump’s mother could not ever renounce her British nationality, then how did Cruz escape the dominion of Canada, which in turn is a dominion of Britain?

It is your argument which is absurd.

The oath of American naturalization renounces all other claims of citizenship up the one taking the oath.

You say British law supercedes it.

The it works on Canadian oath of renunciation of citizenship as well, regardless of what Canadian law says.

You can’t have it one way in one situation, and not the other.

I think that on this issue as on all others, you won’t sway the Trumpettes with facts or reason. They will lie, twist, distort, dissemble and deny literally forever. they remain locked in the most rigid state of denial I have ever seen.

There are three kinds of citizenships:
Natural born ( both parents are citizens and born on US soil /in constitution applies only to President)
Naturalized ( born anywhere — takes an oath of citizenship )
Native born. ( born in USA )

You didn’t listen very well in Government class.

I understand what you’re saying- and I’ve always thought Trump was tanking for Cruz-— but, we’ll have to see how this plays out. On the positive side, Cruz doesn’t seem concerned.

That is correct. Having some family that moved up to Canada myself, there is confusion over the concept of ‘enumeration’ and ‘registered voters’. Someone who is ‘enumerated’ MAY be an eligible and registered voter IF they meet the requirements of Canadian law so far as birth and immigration status. But simply being listed on what is basically a census taker’s form proves nothing so far as voting eligibility is concerned.

A registered voter MUST be enumerated in order to qualify them for going to the polls on election day. Without enumeration and being included on the voter rolls (subject to legal status), they cannot vote.

Lol...While Cruz was fighting Reid and Pelosi from the Senate floor, Trump was putting tens of thousands into their campaign coffers. So tell me again how conservative Mr. Trump is...! Cruz walks the walk while Trump funds Obama’s buddies Reid, Pelosi, and Hillary with his private dollars.

How gullible some folks are.....!

Not according to Forbes or Bloomberg. The guy inflates and exaggerates everything about himself. Serious insecurity problems.

Cruz - not so much, according to Laurence Tribe.

Are you just mistaken about what Tribe said, or are you lying? Tribe said there has not been a definitive case on the subject, so it is not "settled". But in his opinion, there is no question Cruz is NBC. And that is the same opinion that all of the major legal and constitutional experts from both parties have on the subject. I'll take their opinion over Trump's any day.

“Ted’s parents moved to Calgary in 1967 - Ted was born in 1970. You had to be a permanent resident for 5 years before you could even apply for citizenship in Canada at the time.”

One or both of Ted Cruz’s parents were either a Canadian citizen or a Canadian permanent resident. it seems unlikely there was time enough to become a Canadian citizen, so it seems one or both of them had to be a Canadian Permanent Resident. Not long after the father naturalized as a Canadian citizen, so he must have been a Canadian permanent Resident when Ted Cruz was born. We don’t know yet whether or not the mother was also a Permanent Canadian Resident, but it appears to be highly likely given Rafael’s acquisition of Canadian citizenship by naturalization.

Put that broad brush away pal. I didn't need to be persuaded on this issue and stated such in my post #212. Trump has done Cruz a favor by bringing this up now before the 'RATs can make political hay out of it, and we all know they will, starting with that nutcase Alan Grayson (D-Deranged) Florida.

they remain locked in the most rigid state of denial I have ever seen.

How many of those 'states of denial' HAVE you seen John?
