I see those lyrics as actually creepier.
At the start of the WoT, an unnamed CIA agent remarked that there was a terrorist internment camp in another nation nicknamed “The Hotel California”. He noted that there were “many” parallels between the song and what took place there.
Definitely creepy, and changes the character of the song.

Yes, a faulty section of a borehole casing failed, deeply enough that it can’t easily be patched. They’re trying to drive a new borehole that will intersect the failed one below the break, so they can cut off the failed section, and then can properly cap the new bore.
