The problem is Cruz’s mother. His father took Canadian citizenship. His father made some public statement at some point that could suggest he thought both he and his wife were Canadian.
If she ever renounced her US citizenship or took any oath, then it’s a new ballgame.
Some statement at some time ... good sourcing.
I tend toward the problem being the lack of producing the paper trail when the question is raised.
Let's see the records.
Questions arise about both parents. Accoding to Wiki, Cruz sr met his second wife, Ted’s mom in 1969 in New Orleans. Some time between then and Ted’s birth in Canada, they made the move. Assuming Ted’s mom was still a US citizen at the time, the question becomes how did Ted acquire Canadian citizenship? Wish he straightens the story out with proofs
Canada required then an application for Landed Immigrant to obtain a work permit and resident status. Back then, this wasn’t granted so swiftly but in any case it of itself would not have granted Canadian birth right citizenship to Ted.
The Landed Immigrant Status is the first step to Canadian citizenship which requires six years residency before applying for citizenship.
Wiki bio of Cruz Sr states that he returned to the USA in the mid 70’s. In the next sentence on Wiki it states that Sr renounced his Canadian citizenhip in 2005. So when and how did Sr and wife become Canadian citizens? At least one parent had to become a Canadian citizen or have applied for citizenship having completed the residency requirements. The published facts are hazy about that period of the Cruz’s life. Such as they are, it appears that at best, they managed to acquire Canadian citizenship and then quickly moved back to the USA.
This will be the point of attack: when and how did Ted acquire the Canadian citizenship which he renounced in 2014?
Did his mother renounce her US citizenship? And if so, when was that? And what was Cruz Sr. citizenship status at the time of the move to Canada and at the time of the return to USA.
His father’s bio is very vague on important facts and dates of that period.
