Metro lays out missteps before officers shot, killed fugitive holding cell phone

Las Vegas police Monday outlined a handful of missteps, including miscommunication from the U.S. Marshals Office, that led up to the moment two Metro officers shot and killed an unarmed fugitive holding a cell phone in front of a west valley home on New Year's Eve.

Eighteen minutes before the shooting, Metro knew nothing about the fugitive, Keith Childress. Though the agency often works with U.S. Marshals to catch fugitives, Metro had its eye on the Strip that afternoon, where about 1,000 officers were working with the Nevada National Guard to secure the area for celebrations, Undersheriff Kevin McMahill said.

So the local U.S. Marshals office handled the Childress case alone. They watched for him at an apartment that belonged to the fugitive's family friend, just north of Desert Breeze park, for two days. And when he came out that afternoon, the marshals moved in.

Wack ‘em and stack ‘em. Are any of these ever ruled anything but a “good shoot?”

" Childress didn't have a clean slate: He faced a series of charges including two counts of aggravated assault; two counts of armed robbery; two counts of kidnapping; two counts of theft and burglary in the first degree — all of which stemmed from an armed, March 2013, home invasion he took part in, McMahill said.

But the reason he was a fugitive was because he skipped his sentencing for those charges two weeks ago and fled to Las Vegas to avoid prison time."

(snip)

"What could we have done differently to maybe change the outcome of this particular incident?" McMahill said. "Well it's a little too early for me to give you the response to that just yet."

There there. These things happen. Sniff! sniff! :)

I’ll give the cops the benefit of doubt in this case.

Yeah... but they still shouldn’t be throwing bullets around in public when it is not warranted.

After listening to the video, it sounds like suicide by cop to me.
He had ample warning, was told to take his hand out of his pocket, told to drop the gun. He was told if he started to walk to the police he would be shot.
He kept his hand in his pocket on what the police believed to be a gun and walked toward the police.
He knew what was going to happen.

But Childress didn't move, ignoring a total of about 24 commands from Bohanon over the course of two minutes to "Surrender," "Drop the gun," and "Get on the ground."

"If you advance at us, you will be shot," Bohanon said. And Childress did.

Suicide by cop.

Funny how when these incidents occur there is only one version of what happened - the police version. Dead men tell no tales. Also odd that the body camera of one of the officers wasn’t turned on.

all irrelevant. But if you watch the video, all will be clear to you.

In addition to the cellphone found in his pocket, Childress also had a completed application for a Darwin Award.

A better than average campaign commercial, though a but long for network TV. Loved the rinos!

Somewhere back there we started calling them “LEOs,” law enforcement officers. That was a mistake. Prior to that they were generally referred to as “peace officers.” The new designator certainly isn’t the only signpost on the road to Perdition, but it does help to point the way.

As an old acquaintance of mine once said about District Presidents within what was then my branch of Lutheranism, “If you start calling them bishops, they will start acting like bishops.” Truer words were never spoken, about either LEOs or bishops.
