Trump Says He Supports Reauthorizing Patriot Act, NSA Metadata Collection
Truth in Media ^ | Dec 7, 2015 | Barry Donegan

"I tend to err on the side of security," said 2016 Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on the Hugh Hewitt Show.

2016 Republican presidential candidate and billionaire real estate mogul Donald Trump said that he supports reauthorizing the USA PATRIOT Act and bulk cell phone metadata collection by the National Security Agency in an interview on the Hugh Hewitt Show earlier this month.

In the above-embedded clip, Hewitt asks Trump, “On metadata collection, Ted Cruz is glad the NSA got out of it. Marco Rubio wants it back. What’s Donald Trump think?”

“Well, I tend to err on the side of security, I must tell you,” Trump replied, “and I’ve been there for longer than you would think. But, you know, when you have people that are beheading if you’re a Christian and frankly for lots of other reasons, when you have the world looking at us and would like to destroy us as quickly as possible, I err on the side of security, and so that’s the way it is, that’s the way I’ve been, and some people like that, frankly, and some people don’t like that.”

“And I’m not just saying that since Paris, I’m saying for quite some time. I assume when I pick up my telephone people are listening to my conversations anyway, if you want to know the truth. It’s pretty sad commentary, but I err on the side of security,” said Trump.

"I hope we get all of the details on what both of these guys believe before we cast our votes. "

The next 4 months will tell us all we need to know. A contested primary brings out all issues, and anyone who is not clear in their position of slaughtered.

I’ve been posting Trump’s positions and statements and getting attacked for it. There is a cult of personality around Trump like the one around 0bama.

Most people don’t vote on one single issue. And while I hate the whole Patriot Act - I did not see the GOP kick George Bush out of office for signing it and renewing it into law back in the day.

Be careful. If you remind them of Perot, they will yell at you, LOL.

That is one area of disagreement right there. He needs to rethink all of this. That is one of the things Americans are mad at. All of this surveillance will not make us more safe. It's an illusion so that we will give up our rights.

I think it’s a mistake on his part, but I don’t think it’s a glaring error for our times.

I would prefer he say, “provided there is no NSA (or other) collection of TOTAL data.”

Then I’d be a bit more comfortable with it. I don’t care that they know 222-555-1212 called 223-555-1627.

Definitely is one around Cruz too based on a lot of posting activity here. To deny that is dishonesty.

I would not worry too much about it.

After all, Trump will change his mind back & forth on this a few times before any ballots get cast.

Go to any ‘privacy rights’ organization and you’ll find they don’t agree with you.

The changes were miniscule (though arguably an improvement).

Same goes for Cruz.

At this point it looks to be either Trump or Cruz....or Hillary.

Instead of shooting ourselves over Trump vs Cruz we should be worried about the alternatives.

The link you provided indicates Cruz supports ending metadata collection.

Same ole... Same ole. Somebody posts something, makes a generalization without real perusal and the anti-Trump crowd goes, "See! See!"

Here is a clue, the government can get your phone records (or anything else for that matter) with a warrant now and always before. Trump is calling for an individual warrant before the metadata can be accessed.

Right now the NSA gets the metadata instantly from its source remotely, without a warrant for any reason - no real difference than before.

OK, I’ll give you the meta data but even your explanation leaves out the FISA Court which in itself is dubious at best. But what about the Patriot Act? Do you support it also?

Nice try. This is from a month ago.

So he's changed his mind since then? This is no longer valid?

I disagree with Trump on this issue but I agree with him on almost everything else. You will never agree 100% with anybody.

“No, it is never necessary. We the People have not repealed the 4th Amendment which clearly states one....”

I don’t disagree with you.

“Necessary” is perhaps not the best word choice, but my English is limited sometime to what I was taught.

Perhaps “expedient” would have been a better choice.

It's on the fringes and actually depends on who is in charge of the executive branch (we need profiling). There is no real right to ultimate privacy only unlawful search and seizure. FISA could work if properly directed, it never was.

I am more concerned about other things we have done: highway checkpoints, asset forfeiture, restrictive gun laws (to name a few) - and a myriad of things that I think the government is doing which we know nothing about.

So you’re for NSA data collection on all of us? If so, then you oppose the Fourth Amendment.

People who support Cruz are willing to criticize his positions. Many of the Trump supporters are not. Taht’s a cult of personality — they lash out whenever the slightest criticism of their guy occurs. Just like the 0bama personality cult.

There is no such response from Cruzers.

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

Creating an electronic record of your telephone calls, text messages, and emails is part of the normal course of business if you use such things. These records are not part of your person, house, papers or effects (i.e., other things you own). Generally speaking they are business records of the company with whom you have contracted to provide the service.

In proposing a special court to authorize searching those records, Donald Trump’s statement is fully within the Fourth Amendment protections. Preferably the records would be in the custody of the providers, but situations may require rapid access so provisions for that need to be made.

Granted, the last several administrations have be part of a Satanic Cabal to create a One World Government and a One World Religion, but stopping NSA data collection is not going to stop them.
