“Not that it would do much good against the main gun.”

You just need to land one right down the breech (and hope it’s an HE round). That’s what I was hoping would happen when the sniper saw the tank turret turning towards him in Private Ryan...

“I was laughing because a lot were 5.56.”

You wouldn’t be laughing if hit by 5.56. It is plenty to do the job, especially with the best bullets available. Definitely a SHTF must-have.

They have tried to hit me, but only my issued jacket had holes.

Myself, I prefer a man’s calibre, and that’s .308 or 7.62mm.

I’d like to see Marcus Luttrell’s reaction to that comment. :-)

Take a look at this link, in particular the performance of the 55 gr. FMJ in ballistic gelatin. The job it does on that femur is also pretty impressive.

There are better bullets available to civilians such as the Barnes TTSX line. The Marines now also have the SOST round, which is becoming available to civilians as well.

I’ll grant you that a ~6.5 mm round on the AR-15 platform is better for longer shots, at the cost of increased recoil and heavier ammo. With proper bullets, there is no problem with the damage a 5.56 does at shorter ranges (~400 yards or less).

7.62 NATO (.308 Win) isn’t necessary or suitable for a light rifle - which is why it was retired from that role. 7.62x39 is ballistically inferior to the 5.56 NATO, and offers no meaningfully better terminal ballistics. This explains its replacement by the 5.45x39.

I like a 223 bolt for coyotes, it’s a flat shooting round. It’s affected more by wind etc though. For combat, I don’t find 7.62 x 51 that heavy. Sure you get 20 rounds vs 30, but the impact it has is impressive. Even if you miss, they’re probably hunkering down.

I know there’s a large variety of ammo available, I just like the extra stopping power afforded by the bigger calibre. Especially when body armour is involved.

Possibly. But I read it right here on FR, so it must be true.
