I’m not aware of the line between whatever and “high power”. I’ve owned a Browning High Power, but, c’mon, 9mm = high power?
He calls AK47 and AR15 high power? The 7.62x39 Russian is a fine round, but high power? with similar ballistics as our beloved .30-30WIN?
Uninformed reporters are all too common. Or is it the BCC that doesn’t know what’s up?
Say what you want about the captions, but the photography is excellent. Also, at your link, and the link in Post 20, there is a good little video of the photographer giving some background info about his project.
Mocking “brit journalists” on a Saturday morning is just good fun.
I saw a lot of comments under the pics talking about these very powerful rifles, or very high power assault rifles etc.
I was laughing because a lot were 5.56.
A stopped tank with damaged tracks can be extremely dangerous as the crew has nothing to lose by fighting to the death with that main gun.
Anyway, this “Hello Kitty” antitank rifle is sorta cute. However it can only be used against Pink Panzers.
;^)
“High power” is an old term. My understanding is it refers to chamber pressure, and is usually associated with bottle necked cartridges in rifles. (example: 44-40 vs 30-06, etc.)
Your 9mm Browning had the highest chamber pressure of any pistol round of the day, and is still no slouch today. It ran 50% higher than a 38 Special.
When it was developed, the .223 was in the range of magnum rifles of the day, but is not called a magnum. 5.56 mil loadings are even higher in chamber pressure.
To news folks today, anything more powerful than a 22LR is called “high power” if not “high caliber” ??
Thanx wrench.
I believe you’re right about the MSM calling anything with more power than a .22lr “high power” with the intention of impressing ignorant viewers that folks with guns are handling such dangerous materials as to destroy large swaths of the country accidentally if not with the intention of forcing their will upon the innocent populace.
Of course to the Brits, .22lr is too dangerous for the subjects to safely handle as well.
Not subjects, citizens. The UK press is pretty hopeless when it comes to guns.
An anti tank rifle had better have a longer barrel than that.
Got to shoot a 20mm Lahti one time. Three rounds and that was enough for me. I guess they lost it in lake Michigan. Shame really.
I think I got it right.
UK press pretty terrible when it comes to guns. Knowledge gleaned from years of war films lol.
If I remember correctly, a few years ago a guy was just walking down the street, somewhere in the UK. He spotted a .22LR round in the street, and thinking he was doing the right thing, picked it up and took it to the local police station. He was promptly arrested for ‘Possession’.
Nationally distributed KOOLAID.
“Of course to the Brits, .22lr is too dangerous for the subjects to safely handle as well.”
I believe spilling a half a box of 22LR in Japan is cause to evacuate the area and declare it a hazardous site due to UXO.
Some countries have a real phobia about gunz.
Oh, and the Brits are rather wonky when it comes to knives, as well.
You DO know that we own and can own guns, yes?. Hell, I own two. Just not as much a gun culture as the US, that’s all. No different to us being a soccer and rugby country and you not. Or that you eat philly cheesesteaks and we don’t tend to. Not wrong, just different.
If we are playing the freedom parlour game, I’d point out that the US has never passed the ERA or that Americans don’t have a constitutional right to vote. Whilst both rights are rights in the UK. But then that would be pointless point-scoring wouldn’t it. -sarc
And btw we haven’t been subjects since 1st Jan 1949 and the passing of the 1948 Nationality Act.
Sounds a bit internet myth to me.
The UK has a long problem with youth and knife crime, so the govts/police (not the people) have always been a bit OTT when it comes to knives.
Actually we do, but have allowed it to be chipped away at. As I have said, the UK press is woeful when it comes to knowing guns.
Ok, have at it !! :)
“Anti tank” rifle? Hardly...50 BMG, maybe...
Aside from Old Glory appearing to touch the ground in a couple of shots, and one example of improper muzzle control, just a bunch of free citizens exercising their God-given rights to keep and bear arms...
Nothing particularly “high-powered” there either...Standard semi-auto “militia” rifles chambered in 7.62 and 5.56 mm, mostly, and a collection of handguns in common calibers...
Scary as hell perhaps for our erstwhile allies, but for American gun owners, aside from the decent photography, nothing much to see here folks...
