it sounds an electrician might have been in the shaft and got smashed by an elevator? Not sure. But it did not go well for the electrician who died.

But they described the last night as a scene out of a horror movie.
I'll bet they were met at the dock by a hundred lawyers.

Prayers for the family of Mr. Opazo. He made it to the age of 66, and was still working as an electrician, when ‘something happened’. Oftentimes, repairmen don’t make it obvious when they’re working on something. I believe this has occurred in the BART train systems of the San Francisco Bay Area. Over here, it’s common to be on a train and whizz past a group of repairmen off to the side in the long darkened tunnel.

This is the kind of thing that happens when maintenance “locks/tags out an electrical panel for access to dangerous areas, and some clueless puke comes along and says “what’s this lock?, this must be why the elevator isn’t working, I’ll just take it off”
Been there, seen that

That would kill the appetite.
When traveling, beware of the Chinese elevators and escalators. Liveleak has several videos of those deadly contraptions.

Nightmare.
Back in university I was riding the dorm elevator up to my floor. Late, no one else in the cab. Side egress door was loose and I popped it open. As the elevator was whooshing up I stuck my head out to take a look. Looked down the long dark shaft and saw nothing. Pulled my head back in and less than a second later an iron beam between the two shafts when zipping by.
I was less than a second from being decapitated.
This happened over 30-yrs ago and I still get the shivers over it.

Another tale of terror from a Carnival cruise ship-after all the news stories of sickness, bad food, malfunctioning and dirty bathrooms, passengers mysteriously falling from upper decks to their deaths, etc-why would anyone in their right mind get on a Carnival cruise ship-those are Klingon prison ships...

Many years go, I was often in a building that had a circa 1890's freight elevator, one that was essentially an open platform with just the transverse top of the frame overhead and no ceiling or "cage." The drum and assorted gearing was way up at the top in total shadow, and it was a bit creepy to look up and see the cable just sort of "disappear" into that void. I operated it a couple times but that thing made me nervous.
But not as nervous as this incident would make me from that time forward.

Carnival is a ghetto compared to other lines. Worst cruise I’ve ever taken.

Odd. I actually know a cruise ship electrician who was badly injured in an accident while working on an elevator. While going through therapy it was unclear if he’d ever be able to work again. He recovered, but was stuck on shore after that.
