Time.com Writer Cites Temperature at North Pole, Alaska As From THE North Pole (DOH!)

The temperature in the Fairbanks, Alaska suburb of North Pole earlier today was apparently in the low-40s Fahrenheit.
It was then that Alexandra Sifferlin at Time.com reported the Alaska town's temperature as if it came from the North Pole. The only current evidence of Sifferlin's original grievous error at Time.com is a deliberately vague correction at the bottom of her post telling readers that "This article originally misidentified a temperature reading as belonging to the North Pole." Fortunately, ever-alert blogger Patterico excerpted the post as originally written (the link to North Pole, Alaska's conditions at Weather.com is in the original):

Hmmm. Geographically challenged? Deliberate push promoting glow-bull warming? Honest mistake? (right!) So +/- a few hundred miles. What difference does it make at this point in time? Then again, there is a lot of flooding going on along the Missouri and Mississippi rivers which must prove the actual north pole is melting. Prayers up for any FReepers living in the flood zones.
Happy New Year and be safe if you have to go out.

I love how the media speaks of the “historic” flooding along the Mississippi.
Apparently none of these people were around in the early 90s when parts of the river were like 25 miles wide.

And other “news” sources are continuing to push the Unfrozen North Pole story. I’ve seen it posted numerous times. CNN specifically.

I'm on the fence about giving her a pass. You don't have to talk about the weather.
To: rktman
Actually, North Pole, Alaska is about 1500 miles south of the actual North Pole.
Think of the difference between Maine and Naples, Florida in winter!
(As I comment from 85 degree Naples!)

Is it historic for the time of year?
The Corps of Engineers has so thoroughly jiggered the hydrology of the Mississippi Basin, it is virtually impossible to attribute flooding on the Mississippi to natural events. The 1990’s flooding was attributable at least in part to complacency and poor management by the Corps. Flood control basins were allowed to fill for recreational purposes and were not available to impound flood waters when needed.

In the 90’s they may have been taking “nap time” when the Mississippi flooded.
