This is what occurs in a slow-news environment at The Washington Post: they lament the lack of honors for Barack Obama. The front page of Saturday’s paper carried the headline “Hawaii wipes out in Obama honors.” With nothing better to do in Honolulu, White House reporters Greg Jaffe and Juliet Eilperin spent 1,286 words unspooling the “embarrassing record” of Hawaii’s failure to name more than a snowcone after the current president.
The story began at Sandy Beach, where former Honolulu city councilman Stanley Chang wanted to name a favorite Obama hangout for the president:
“It was almost a prose poem,” Chang said. Obama imagined a sea turtle swimming in profile, “like a hieroglyph in the water,” the rolling crest of a perfect wave, the sunset “glittering” as the swimsuit-clad commander in chief sipped a soda.
Where have we heard that kind of Obama gush before? Oh yes, Eli Saslow of your Washington Post. His gushy Christmas Day front-pager in 2008 carried this passage:
Between workout during his Hawaii vacation this week, he was photographed looking like the paradigm of a new kind of presidential fitness, one geared less toward preventing heart attacks than winning swimsuit competitions. The sun glinted off his chiseled pectorals sculpted during four weightlifting sessions each week, and a body toned by regular treadmill runs and basketball games.
In that spirit, Jaffe and Eilperin complained:
Obama’s return to the place of his birth also calls to mind an embarrassing record of legislative stumbles: Since 2009, Hawaii’s politicos have sought to name two schools, an abandoned lot, a scenic overlook and two state holidays after Obama. An effort to put the 1960s-era cinder-block apartment building — where he lived — on the National Historic registry also fell short.
For now, the most famous thing that bears Obama’s name here is the “Snowbama,” a shaved ice that’s a mix of lemon, lime, cherry and passion guava flavors and sells for $4 at Island Snow, one of the president’s favorite vacation haunts.
Clearly the locals want to keep the tourist money coming.
Didn’t realize that Nairobi was in Hawaii.
Next burg to be buried under lava: Obamaville. Perfect metatphor.
Meanwhile, Warner Brothers studio, where Ronald Reagan toiled as a contract player for two decades, has not one thing named after one of our greatest Presidents.
He has a fake Hawaii birth certificate named after him. Isn’t that good enough?
Reagan be white.
Cry me a river. I hope they never actually defile the beautiful Hawaiian landscape with a statue of that lying US-hating socialist egomaniac.
Obama is honored every day in the Washington Post by the bootlickers who write the supposed “news” articles in that “newspaper”.
Surely they can find a landfill to name.
Barry be half white.
Perhaps these reporters only looked for accolades under the name “Barak Hussein O.” They should have looked for volcanoes, bath houses, landfills, sewer treatment facilities, and sinkholes named “Barry Soetoro”, a name with which the Aloho staters might be more familiar.
Isn’t there a sewage treatment plant somewhere named for Obama? You can’t top that for symbolism .
Maybe a homeless shelter made from dung for the thousands of vagrants that have rapidly grown in number since 2008.
Id name every public toilet there after him.
We have the Obama Memorial National Debt - an extra $9T and counting under that socialist bigot.
We have the ObamaCare Memorial Slowdown in Medical Progress, a near stop in the improvement of medical treatment, other than cost controls that cost lives.
We have the Obama Memorial Arab Spring, which has turned stable thuggish dictatorships into unstable thuggish terrorist states killing innocent westerners - a fitting tribute to the terrorist in chief.
We have the Obama Memorial Economic Slowdown, an economy that lost two generations of jobs under a single communist’s drive to fundamentally transform what used to be a free and prosperous country. That one actually affected Hawaii far more than it affected conservative states and should receive official state recognition.
Obama is shockingly evil and destructive, and I agree with the WaPost. Destruction at that level merits recognition in the cultural foreigner’s adopted home state.
As embarrassing as Obama is internationally, I would think it more embarrassing mentioning the attempt.
