Dr. Robert Spitzer, a Jewish American psychiatrist who played a leading role in establishing agreed-upon standards to describe mental disorders and eliminating homosexuality's designation as a pathology, died Friday in Seattle. He was 83.
Gay-rights activists credit Spitzer with removing homosexuality from the list of mental disorders in the D.S.M. in 1973. He decided to push for the change after he met with gay activists and determined that homosexuality could not be a disorder if gay people were comfortable with their sexuality.
At the time of the psychiatric profession's debate over homosexuality, Spitzer told the Washington Post: "A medical disorder either had to be associated with subjective distress — pain — or general impairment in social function."
Dr. Jack Drescher, a gay psychoanalyst in New York, told the Times that Spitzer's successful push to remove homosexuality from the list of disorders was a major advance for gay rights. "The fact that gay marriage is allowed today is in part owed to Bob Spitzer," he said.

Do you suppose most psychopaths feel "distress" at their condition? Don't you suppose that they are "comfortable" with their madness? Is that unempirical mumbo-jumbo supposed to constitute a scientific definition of mental disorder???
Nice try viz. psychopaths, but you missed the most important: general impairment in social function. Psychopaths most definitely suffer general impairment in social function. In fact, that is almost by definition what makes a person a psychopath.
“Anti-social personality disorder” is a listed disorder, and it may not cause the individual any distress, or keep him from functioning in society.
Furthermore, the individual is not at all likely to seek treatment in order to change, unlike some people with homosexual tendencies who do desire to to change.
Or arsonists, or pedophiles, or...
Especially when you force the rest of the population to celebrate their “deviancy “.

If they refrain from getting physical, or at least from getting caught, and there are a fair number of functioning sociopath/psychopaths out there.
I think maybe even more as you go up the political and corporate echelons.

How then does one explain "gay bashing" being disproportionately committed by gays?
The vast majority of mentally ill are comfortable with their disorders so therefore they are normal. Now all the shrinks can go and get useful work.
A sociopath only needs to hit three of the categories. He can function in the narrow social sense of not being in constant legal trouble or general ostracism.
Ted Bundy was charming. The BTK killer was a respected family man.
And everyone can name a politician or ten who lies, deflects responsibility, and acts recklessly with regard to the commonweal.
