Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee on Wednesday blasted Ted Cruz after a POLITICO report quoted the Texas senator telling a donor that fighting gay marriage wouldn't be a "top-three priority" for his administration.
"Conservatives are being asked to 'coalesce' around yet another corporately-funded candidate that says something very different at a big donor fundraiser in Manhattan than at a church in Marshalltown," Huckabee said in a statement released by his campaign Wednesday afternoon. "Shouldn't a candidate be expected to have authenticity and consistency, instead of having to look at a map to decide what to believe and what to say?"
Cruz's stance, expressed privately to a group of moderate Republican donors in New York earlier this month, seems to contradict his public statements. In June, for example, he told NPR that gay marriage opposition would be "front and center" in his campaign. But in July, he rejected a Supreme Court ruling on marriage equality, insisting marriage is a state issue.

So ... does this mean you will not vote for any candidate who states that this is not one of the top priorities?
Maybe???
I’m not sure they can be said exactly.
Mr. Trump does not have a record that they can score him on, so the most anyone can do is go off his word, which until recently skewed toward the liberal/progressive side.
My greatest concern with him is the timing of his conversion. It’s very suspect and comes off as disingenuous. People usually do not make major philosophical changes that late in life. Maybe he did, but maybe he didn’t?
If the race was him vs Romney or him vs McCain, I could see the argument for taking a chance he is the real deal.
The race is him against one of the greatest soldiers the conservative movement has had since Ronald Reagan. Why on earth would a conservative risk Trump being the real deal over a proven conservative???

Mr. Trump has been a conservative since at least 2000, 15 years ago, so not a recent conversion unless you are just going on what the media tells you. Mr. Cruz is far right of Reagan in his public persona, what he is in private I don’t know. His political positions seem to change although he gives wonderful excuses for them.
Excellent point. For that VERY reason, I think the presence of Trump has been a godsend for Cruz.
Cruz is conservative. Very conservative. He’s the most conservative serious candidate we’ve seen in years (though Tom Tancredo, who I supported, could give him a run). But Trumps boisterousness and constant embroilment in controversy have made Ted seemed tame and allowed him to quietly build quite a campaign.

Huckster is bitter that Ted’s getting all the evangelicals in Iowa. That’s all this is.

Confucius say ... if you live in glass house, you should undress in the basement.
I had already dealt with that in my original post at #142. It’s at the end.
Personally, I'm not sure, being insufficiently taught in con law; but I'd certainly listen if anyone cared to make the argument (in a room that was not being Delphi'd by the 'Rats, the New World Order, and the Bilderbergers; but I repeat myself).
I’m not so sure Mr. Trump’s conservative views are that old.
The man gave money to Hillary Clinton as recently as ‘07, including folks like Charles Rangel!
A conservative would not do that.
As to public/private conservatism, Trump publicly does not have conservative positions as recently as this year, and like Cruz, I have no idea how conservative Trump is in private...
Cruz’s answer was word for word the same as on every other occasion. His priority is the Constitution and states rights. Let the states decide. They took one word of his answer and made it the headline without the rest of the statement.
Isn’t it kind of a moot point, now, anyway?
IF I was in the race, and had numbers as Huckabee’s I’d keep my mouth shut to the guy with numbers like Cruz’s.
There IS a reason.
Yup.
What people, even here, don’t get is that Cruz wants the federal government to get out of our lives, not get more involved in matters best left to the states.
One word was taken out of a statement and used to try to say Cruz said something he didn’t say. That’s not a moot point.
The Democrat party is Ethan Krupp (pajama boy), “We have no morals and we will attack you.” Well it’s time we attacked back.
Let’s get something straight ...
Marriage is defined BY GOD - not the federal government - AND NOT THE STATES, no matter the Tenth Amendment.
Marriage is the life union of one man to one woman. Period.
What the “States” have to say about it means absolute SQUAT!
God is THE definer of marriage - NOT the Constitution.
Only an idiot would make gay marriage a top-three priority. Is isn’t.
That is the problem.
That, and keeping gay money and blackmail from buying an outcome, again.
He’s been most articulate in the kiddie debates, but he has been unable to revive the limited enthusiasm that he generated in 2008. Probably couldn’t win the AR primary in a one-on-one race with Trump now, but Arkansans may have a lingering interest in Mrs. Bill.
Concurring bump.
I've read (sometimes in here) that Congress has the power to set the Judiciary's scope and remove subjects from their purview. I can see where that would help, but I'm not sure what it would do for e.g. resuscitating the state of American law pre-Roe vs. Wade, or pre-Lawrence, pre-Citizens United (which needs to reconsider the legal status of artificial persons i.e. corporations and NGO's), and so on.
It would probably take a constitutional amendment to reverse a lot of the recent, abusive decisions.
