Quentin Tarantino's 'The Hateful Eight' is the best, most thoughtful Western movie in ages
BI ^

Early on in “The Hateful Eight,” John Ruth (Kurt Russell) keeps repeating the line “slow like molasses.” Later on, another character informs his gang that their mission is going to take patience.

This describes “The Hateful Eight” well, too: It deserves your patience.

“The Hateful Eight,” the latest film by Quentin Tarantino, shows the very odd path that one of the greatest living filmmakers has decided to take. While many directors start out conventional and then experiment once they have clout, Tarantino has abandoned much of the nonlinear storytelling on which he made his name (with "Reservoir Dogs" and "Pulp Fiction") for something more traditional.

Yup. Should have won for “The Stunt Man” and “My Favorite Year” as well. Like Cary Grant, had to settle for the “Lifetime Achievement” Oscar.

I’m not sure I’d go that far against him, I generally do not like to do that sort of thing, but I see someone up thread has seen the film and did not give it good reviews at all, so that is kind of troubling.

If it really is that bad, Tarantino needs to quit focusing on retard politics and racism and go back to making the unique type of movies that he is known for.

The Western Film As Political Allegory

The Western genre is probably the most hated of all of film dramas by the left. The whole point of the Western is to exalt rugged individualism; the whole thrust of leftism is to submerge the individual into the collective.

Usually cited as an example of a movie that changed Western genre, High Noon is the story of a man abandoned by his friends and neighbors and very nearly by his bride thus forcing him to choose between his conception of duty and his physical survival. The town probably qualifies for Hillary Clinton's conception that it takes a village. In this case, the village, that is the collective, failed and it was only the inner strength of Gary Cooper, the Quiet Man of the West, who could save the day and preserve his honor by acting alone and resorting to a firearm. Even worse, his bride, nominally a pacifist, picks up a weapon and joins the fight on his behalf.

The image of the American cowboy is one who is despised here in Europe and the and word "cowboy" has become a term of derision often named at Americans, especially Americans like George Bush, who are demeaned as mindless and dangerous loose cannons. In Europe the cowboy is a character who is essentially reckless and stupid.

The celluloid cowboy is anathema to the left. He rides into town not on any known road or designated route but out of the wilderness by a route of his own choosing. He is conveyed not by public transportation but by his privately owned horse. He arrives according to his own will and not by any published public schedule. From our first acquaintance with him, he is utterly independent and free of government restraint.

He is not a man who solves problems by persuasion or by enlisting the support of his fellows rather he solves problems alone. When confronted with bad guys he does not seek shelter with public authorities, he stands alone and fights it out. Worse, he solves the problems, that is he confronts the bad guys, with a gun. In the Western, problems are personalized under black hats and the solution is clear and completely satisfactory and comes from the end of a gun.

The cowboy wins the girl not because he has portrayed the feelings of a metrosexual, but because he has displayed manly virtues. When he rides off into the sunset he does so a free man.

Many conservatives regard the 1992 Clint Eastwood movie, Unforgiven, to be excellent and even conservative version of the genre. True, much of the elements recited above appear in the movie but it is also clear that Eastwood was careful to mix in feminist and racial themes as well as police brutality to make the story line more politically correct. I would have been happier with the old Clint chomping a cigar portraying a Dirty Harry of the old West.

Hateful Eight is boring. I love Tarantinos older films but this and Django were crappy in my opinion. Hateful Eight has a great cast..I love Walton Goggins but the script doesn’t really go anywhere. Its clue in a cabin with pointless gore. Also Quentins obsession with race and saying the n word every ten seconds is tired. It was cutting edge in the 90s but now just seems stupid.

Dont waste your money, wait until its on DVD or whatever.

It started off pretty good...looked like it was going to be great. But then the wheels came off. Violence for the sake of violence. Yes, it’s Tarantino but man this could have been a great movie if he wasn’t so intent on just having a bloodfest.

Second Tarintino movie our entire family will NEVER WATCH, even if it is available for free. Dingo Unchained: Hate and kill whitie! and now Disgusting 8: Hate and kill cops!

Tarintino permanently "Screwed the pooch" and is lethal box office poison.

I really liked Jeff Bridges’ portrayal of Rooster Cogburn.

Both movies are very good.

I read the book as a teen and just about chewed my nails off when the girl was stuck in the snakes’ den. One of the scariest reads ever. :)
