In crew aircraft, the PIC sits in the left seat with the co-pilot working the dials and switches.
In fighters, the stick is controlled by the right hand and throttles the left. . .both the stick and throttles have buttons and switches. . .”HOTAS”

I found the same issues in switching from the 1946 Aeronca Champ (taildragger, stick right hand, throttle left hand, no flaps) to Cessna 150 (control yoke left hand, throttle right hand, flaps/trim tabs). Flexibility is important. Missed out on the fighter experience. I did get to sit in the F14 prototype cockpit on display at the museum outside the gate at PAX. Not very roomy or comfortable.
