RICHMOND â Attorney General Mark R. Herring (D) plans to announce Tuesday that Virginia will no longer recognize concealed carry handgun permits from 25 states that have reciprocity agreements with the commonwealth.
The move also means Virginians with a history of stalking, drug dealing or inpatient mental-health treatment cannot obtain a permit in a state with comparatively lax laws and carry a handgun legally at home.
Herring said severing the out-of-state agreements can prevent people who may be dangerous or irresponsible from carrying a concealed weapon.
âTo me, this is a commonsense step that can help make Virginians and our law enforcement officers safer by ensuring that Virginiaâs laws on who can and cannot carry a concealed handgun are applied evenly, consistently, and fairly,â he said in a statement provided to The Washington Post.
âOur General Assembly has already identified who can and cannot conceal handguns in Virginia, and we cannot have that decision undermined by recognizing permits from other states with more permissive standards.â

You got to it before me.
When I am in Virginia, I will open carry. As someone mentioned previously, this is what happens when the GOPe and the Democrats band to gether to stop conservative republicans from winning.
That will not help the tourist trade, nor any other walk in businesses in the state.
McAwful is trying to build his resume for when he runs for President
Which is a win-win for these SOBs. ANYTHING to hinder gun ownership or the use thereof.
THAT is genius. There’s probably some Federal highway system law that will prevent it, but it’s a great idea.
VCDL member too and we will take action...
Which is how it will all go down. I find it rather ignorant that many of us are awaiting some 'trigger' event, as though they are going to come all at once for the guns. That won't happen. By the time the water's boiling, we'll be frog soup. There may - and I stress MAY - be pockets of resistance here and there, but for the most part, we WILL go quietly, and abide by their rules and, in the end, the chains of slavery will rest heavily upon us.
"Our General Assembly has already identified who can and cannot conceal handguns in Virginia, and we cannot have that decision undermined by recognizing permits from other states with more permissive standards."
This is total BS!
If you can legally purchase a firearm ANYWHERE IN THE UNITED STATES you can get a concealed carry permit in Virginia if you are a resident.
Under federal law it is ILLEGAL to possess a firearm ANYWHERE IN THE UNITED STATES if you don't meet the criteria to purchase a firearm.
In other words, the law ALREADY EXISTS for Virginia to prosecute someone who illegally has a firearm regardless of which state, if any, issues a concealed carry permit.
(Now, I might be wrong on my interpretation of federal law, but I don't think I am.)
This is nothing more than a way to restrict Second Amendment rights.
Sadly, I agree.
Worms of can open they may.
:-)
I’m with you, partner!
The GOPe establishment in VA has to go, agreed...
Welp, I’d agree with you if you had said the - ahem - North and South of the state are like wo different countries...
Yes, Norfolk, Williamsburg, Charlottesville and some of Richmond are blue but what really screws us here in the North: Fairfax Co to be specific. What with the over paid, tax payer funded govt workers and illegals, the rest of us get out voted....
Has there been a lot of crime committed in Virginia by people with a concealed carry permit from another state? No, I didn’t think so. Just another stupid lib tactic to try and disarm the people. Another cure for a nonexistent problem.
Why spoil the beauty of a thing with legalities?
--attributed to former president and 1912 presidential candidate Theodore Roosevelt.
[If they don't have any respect for the laws of other states, why should we have any for them. And recall that back when the Federal Highway National Superhighway Surface Traffic Regulation Commission mandated the 55-MPH speed limit, it was Wyoming, Montana and [IIRC] Nevada that held out the longest. When the feds threatened to end Wyoming's federal highway money, Wyoming threatened to stop collecting gas tax at the pumps, and offered to put a 15-mile-per-hour speed limit on !-80 and I-90.]
And this one from the Wyoming legislature REALLY has had 'em in a snit.
It being a “new edict” from on high, I haven’t read any emails from the VCDL on this yet. Someone else here may have heard...
Seems to me you are right about it being a legislative action but we, the people of VA voted for traditional marriage (like Prop 8 in CA) only to have Red Herring throw it out...not a peep of opposition from the Opposition Party when it happened.
When in reality, that very person will be taken care of quietly in the night - or away from a stockpile, their preps and such confiscated under color of law, with few, if any actual charges against the person. At that point, they will face the decision to destroy themselves financially to fight, or simply accept the fact that everything they have stockpiled over the years is gone, and there ain't a damned thing they can do about it. At that point,t ehy will effectively be neutered, and rendered no threat to the statist thugs.
This is what is coming, and we are foolish to sit back and allow it to happen, as though somehow, someway, we have sooooo much more to lose than the Founders did. Shame on us.
Gov, Cuchinelli would not have done this. Thanks GOPe.
That’s why a lot of times, when I see the “Don’t Tread On Me” flags, it really should read “I’ve Been Tread Upon”.
Because the Founding Fathers were shooting by now.
Guess I will change my vacation plans from riding my Harley along the Blue Ridge in Galax area this spring to maybe Boone N.C. where I can carry and feel a little safe.
