Hatay Province was essentially stolen from Syria by Turkey in the late 1930's.

I had also read of that quite a while ago. Lots of Turkmen in the region, and Turkey more or less claimed the region because of Turkmen active there. Sort of like what Russia did in Ukraine with Crimea, lots of Russian loyalists so they went in and took it. Lots of contested regions in the world waiting for a war to reclaim them. But yes, Hatay Province is disputed territory by Syria and Turkey. Hope they kill each other without dragging us into a wider war.

One reason I mentioned Hatay Province is that it is still shown as Syrian territory on most Syrian maps. So I'm wondering, if that Russian pilot truly overflew Hatay, could he have been following a Syrian map?

It's quite unlikely that such a mistake would be made by a modern air force, but still...
