Trump's name to be taken off shuttered state park
Fox News ^

An undeveloped, languishing New York state park named after Donald Trump should be renamed, two state legislators said Thursday, citing what they say are discriminatory proposals from the Republican presidential candidate.

Sen. Daniel Squadron and Assemblyman Charles Lavine, both Democrats, said they will introduce legislation they're calling the "Anything but Trump Act" and want Gov. Andrew Cuomo to remove signs for the 440-acre site in Westchester County. The legislation comes after Trump proposed banning Muslim immigrants from the U.S.

Trump donated the land to the state in 2006 after plans for a golf course fell through. Budget cuts prompted the state to close the park in 2010, though signs for it remain.

Lavine, of Long Island, suggests the state rename the park for Peter Salem, a Muslim Revolutionary War soldier from Massachusetts who fought in battles in New York state. Other suggestions include folk singer and activist Pete Seeger.

"The rhetoric and discriminatory proposals we've seen from Mr. Trump don't belong in the presidential election, and don't belong in New York state parks," said Squadron, of Brooklyn. "He has dishonored the state, and should not be honored with a state park named for him."

A spokeswoman for Trump's campaign responded by calling the park "a $100 million gift to the state."

"Mr. Trump is the front-runner for president of the United States of the Republican Party," spokeswoman Hope Hicks said. "He is a proud resident of New York who employs thousands of people. The state cannot remove his name."

Maybe this park should be named Ungrateful Recipients State Park? On a related note, one public works project that should NEVER be renamed is the FDR Drive in NYC. It's very appropriate that it's named for a quintessential big gov't figure. For the last 70+ years, ever since it was converted into a limited access parkway, it's been under perpetual reconstruction and the roadway always looked like it was hit by a mortar attack. And to top it off, it may be slowly sinking into the East River. A perfect example of how just about everything the Gov't touches turns to shiite.

I wonder if the name is in the deed of gift. (LOL, it’s so Empire State that the park has been closed due to budget cuts for the last five years, this in spite of sky-high tax rates. Where do you suppose the money goes?)

With the heavy traffic 24/7/365 on the FDR, I am surprised it’s still a paved road and not a dirt path. I don’t know how you could complete any sort of construction job on the FDR without shutting it down completely for a protracted length of time.

400 Acres....Other areas are blackmailing builders to create parks in proposed subdivisions.

Ungrateful to say the least.

What the hell is happening to our country. I’m so sick of it. I wish we could just split off and be done with it.

Donald Trump is “discriminatory” presumably because he wanted to temporarily halt Muslim immigration. Wasn’t it a group of Muslims, legally in the United States, that murdered about 3,000 New York residents a while back?

400 acres in Westchester, the county just north of NYC, some of the most expensive real estate in the country.

Maintenance costs were $2500 a year. Gimme a break. Pure politics. He was trying to put a golf course there and couldn’t get it approved. The state loses...

Fascism is a state where the people in government use their power and authority to actively pursue their political enemies.

I’m not a Trump fan, but..... Aren’t these Democrats acting like ISIS, wanting to eliminate the past and create an illusion of only them? Will they start blowing these places up soon, and then killing those who think differently?

My thoughts exactly. Why do Dems always do this kind of thing? Remember when California Dems wanted to name a wastewater treatment plant after President Bush. There is a certain junior high mentality among Democrats that doesn't infect Republicans.

The Book “1984” should have been called “2015.”

Well okay then. There are scores of buildings, roads and structures littering West Virginia honoring former KKK/democrat senator Robert Byrd. Let’s get busy.
