Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) is being honest about his position on the Gang of Eight immigration reform bill in 2013.
He opposed the bill, and he introduced an amendment to allow illegal aliens to gain legal status as long as they never became citizens with the right to vote. He did so to show that Democrats were more interested in new votes than in helping illegal aliens. He also did so to show there were conditions under which conservatives would accept immigration reform.
That is the story Cruz is telling, and that is exactly how it happened.
But Bret Baier of Fox Newsâ Special Report and his co-panelists seemed to agree Wednesday that Cruz was dodging questions about his amendment, and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL)79% âs supporters accuse Cruz of lying about past support for allowing illegal aliens to gain legal status.
In fact, Cruz is 100% right about what he supported and why he supported it, as a brief trip through history suffices to show.
The tale actually starts with Rush Limbaugh...

I’ve watched Special Report for years. Unlike some of his FNC colleagues, Brett is usually very friendly and dignified in his political interviews even as he asks tough questions. This was the case during his interviews with Obama. Last evening, I thought he was loaded for bear in the aggressiveness and condescension of his questioning. At times, Baier seemed agitated that he could not pin Cruz down and he would just not accept the answers. For his part, Cruz did substantively well, but did get flustered for a moment at Brett’s disdain and contentiousness, which was probably unexpected.
My problem with this episode is that Baier’s behavior and approach was so different from previous interviews with Cruz and other candidates. He clearly had a goal, which was to damage Cruz...to bring him down a notch by impugning his truthfulness over amnesty. The beneficiary of this attack is Rubio! Since the FNC crew consistently fawns over Kid Marco while Hume, Krauthammer, and others periodically slam or marginalize Cruz, it appears that Baier has moved from a master journeyman journalist, so-called “Fair & Balanced”, to a typical MSM political hack, in the tank against a Cruz Presidency, IMHO. This was very disappointing!
The other side is that Cruz was in lawyer smoke and obfuscation mode. Cruz chose to avoid answering and disclosing the flip flop he has made. Cruz is at fault, not Brett.
Bret is not a presstitute of the MSNBC or Old Gray Whore school where he blatantly covers up. He asked an important debate follow up and cruz chose to obfuscate rather than come clean. Bret you could tell from his facial expression as a master journeyman continued to no avail.
Had he given up, there would bepeople here blaming him for bias.
The antiFox bias dogma is misplaced sour grapes
It won’t make any difference.
Just like with Obamacare where the Gruber stupid Obamabots kept repeating known lies, the Trumpbots will do the same and continue to repeat the lie as if it’s true.
The fact that the strategy of repeating a known lie as if it’s true is exactly the same with Obamabots and Trumpbots pretty much indicates a whole lot of Trumpbots are really democrat operatives.
That would make sense.
Not “misplaced sour grapes”, just disappointment in the the clear bias creeping into a news broadcast that I have trusted for years.
Brett came to the interview with an agenda in his questioning and he appeared agitated when Cruz would not give him his ‘gotcha’ moment. IMHO, Cruz has been consistent on the amnesty issue; Rubio, however, has been the flip-flopper and is lying now about his own positions and those of Cruz.
I’d love to see Brett come after “The Donald” with the same condescension. Of course, under such pointed and relentless questioning Trump would just blow him off and later call him a “loser”, “an idiot”, “a clown”, “a lightweight”, “a maniac”, or some other childish name and threaten to boycott FOX News.
Despite the Baier onslaught, Cruz kept his poise and showed the true class that we have come to expect, especially from a potential President!
It’s been the Clintons favorite strategy for over 24 years now.
Keep people talking about one thing so they don’t talk about something else.
Trump and a lot of the Trumpbots are helping Hillary by keeping her and her problems out of the news.
The more people hear Hillary’s voice or hear about her and what she’s been doing the less they like her.
“Well, the maneuver helped to kill the Gang of Eight s amnesty bill, so there s that.”
Actually it was Cantor’s defeat that killed it. The bill SAILED through the Senate with something like 68 votes.
But in January 2014, before Cantor was defeated, Cruz managed to stop House Republicans from TOTALLY STEPPING INTO IT, with their “Standards for Immigration Reform”, which would have led to the Senate getting their Amnesty through. I give Cruz TOTAL CREDIT for that. He went to the conservatives (and the country), explained it was Amnesty, and their ‘standards’ died a quick and thankful death.
But even so, his being ‘cute’ during the Senate debate is definitely hurting him now...just not a good idea in a debate that intense, as he’s learning now.
