There were âsmiling facesâ from the crowds exiting the Los Angeles premiere of The Force Awakens on Monday night. Amongst these, presumably, were Disney executives ecstatic that the $4bn they paid George Lucas for franchise rights looks to have been a sound investment.
Initial reactions from all three screening rooms where the film was shown for the first time â as well as from social media â suggest that JJ Abrams has the chops to please both critics and fans, and that The Force Awakens may well recoup at least half the $4bn by itself.
A journalist for the Hollywood Reporter was one of the first to tweet following the event, at which mobile phones were confiscated.

I don’t think it’s the government’s job to defend my life, or my family’s as that is MY responsibility. I never said that they’re not doing enough.
Fine, but I still get the sense that you're ok with the idea of sitting by and doing nothing if your neighbor's kids are getting killed because he was too stupid to protect them.
Do I have that part right?
Your sense about me is wrong.
Besides, my neighbors are probably better armed than I.
At the movies? What state do you live in?
I don’t go to movies because I don’t like crowds, and I usually have to hit the head at the time when there’s some important plot point in the movie -and miss what it is.
I went to pee in the middle of Empire Strikes Back, and wondered why Luke was talking all nice to that little creature he was berating in the Dagobah swamp before I left.
I’m in Colorado.
I see. Colorado. Because people in Colorado are always packing at the movies, just in case some maniac shows up with a gun and an intention to kill people?
Look: The point of this conversation wasn't whether you enjoy going to movies. You've made that clear.
The point was that you said you believe there will be a terrorist attack at the opening of this one, and you don't seem to have any inclination to do everything in your power to stop it. I'm just trying to get inside of a head that thinks the way you do. Will some part of you feel satisfied if you are right?
I seldom go to a theater any more, for a variety of reasons.
When I do, I am armed.
Some theaters forbid carrying weapons in them.
“Concealed” means nobody knows you have it. (Except Mrs. Mountain. I make sure she knows, so we both execute the same plan.)
It would seem to me that the point of this conversation (That you began with many other posters on this thread by pinging them) is that you’re trying to get me (And the rest of us) all riled up and emotional.
It won’t work with me. And, I can’t speak for the others.
You really want to get in my head? Here’s the short answer:
It’s very boring up there.
And I like it that way.
I hear ya.
Actually, I pinged several individuals who either made the same point as you, or were involved in the conversation.
You just happen to be the one most emotionally vested in the issue. But thanks, I have my answer.
You are content to be someone who runs away from fires. Good to know.
If that was the answer you wanted, and you have that (albeit mistaken) assumption about me, that’s fine. Your choice.
If I were one to care about how others thought about me, I wouldn’t be a gun owner/carrier.
It was a joke.
Everyone knows the only scifi worth watching is Dr. Who.
Really? You sure do spend a lot of time posting on this website for someone who doesn't care how others think about you.
I don’t see the correlation between the two.
Do you believe that people only post here to make them feel better about themselves?
You make it pretty obvious that you do when you go out of your way to get involved in a conversation on a subject that you say you care nothing about.
The subject that I don’t care about is how others feel about me.
The conversation that I was involved in was to pick other FReepers’ brains to see if others had the same opinions about the next potential attack. And, it would seem that they do.
Then, you decided to jump in and try to bait those who you pinged into a, “Who’s The Bestest Operator,” contest with your, “Are you heroes or do you just like to feel like youâre smarter than everyone else?” statement.
Seems pretty clear to me what’s happening at this point.
People knock them, it but they admire well-made traditional apparel items. Too bad most of them are now made in japan
I don't doubt that you want, desperately, to think that you are the type of person who doesn't care what others think about you. And you want very much to others to see you that way as well.
But the we both know that you wouldn't be continuing with this conversation if that was true.
You’re still baiting. And I’m not falling for it.
