Cruz has tied his hands behind his back. If he goes back on his pledge to not attack Trump, he looks bad. If he publicly sticks to the pledge, but deliberately ‘leaks’ negative comments, he looks sneaky and petty. If he does neither of those things, he sits back and hopes Trump self-destructs. Not the best position to be in.

Cruz can highlight his positions in ways that (ahem) “differentiate” them from others on the panel in ways everyone knows about.
