Charlie Hustle is still out.
Baseball's hit king Pete Rose got an early Christmas present from MLB commissioner Rob Manfred, and it wasn't what Rose had on his wish list.

Has Shoeless Joe ever been accorded due process? I’ll admit to never studied the Black Sox scandal in depth, perhaps that’s a job for the Commissioner’s office?
I believe that Jackson was banned for accepting money for the fix and for not reporting the fix.
Buck Weaver took no money and did not fix games, but was banned for knowing about it and not reporting it.
Rose has done 30 years out of the HOF, its they that lost.
Many like me feel the game had people as Owners who had convictions, owned horses, and yet, the guy who excelled on the field has had his sentence last so long.
The Lord has granted Pete a relatively long life to twit the powers that be that every year they look more and more stupid.
Rose has outlived most of the newspaper writers who voted against him.
Long live Rose, and may the newspaper industry die out before he dies.
Viva Rose.
He and Joe Jackson should be made eligible for teh Hall of Fame. Working in baseball may be another question.
You have a legitimate argument. I wasn’t yet a teen when Charlie Hustle burst onto the scene, but I wasn’t a Reds fan. Baseball could go either way with Rose, and I’d be fine with it.
He belongs in the Hall and the Hall has a different set of criteria. Rob Manfred has nothing to do with the Hall.
That being said, I grew up in Cincinnati adoring Pete. I defended him initially over the allegations because he vehemently denied them. Then the truth was out and he even admitted guilt.
Pete is his own worst enemy. He still shifts and hems and haws on accepting responsibility and he still hangs out in gambling venues. Manfred cited these two items as key to his decision.
Not sure an outfielder with 1772 career hits and 54 career home runs has the numbers to get in the hall. I realize his career was cut short but he had something to do with that. Sometimes very good players have a career ending injury that prevents them getting the numbers required to be voted in.
It is NOT a “lifetime ban”, as the rule reads it is a “permanent” ban. Otherwise, Joe Jackson, Buck Weaver and Eddie Ciccotte of the Black Sox scandal of 1919 would be eligible for the Hall since they are all long dead. As it is, they are still banned.
In a way Rose has benefitted by the punitive grossly disproportionately long 30 years of being ostracized by MLB.
Here in Vegas any time there is an event where they have former ball players from any sport signing autographs Pete Rose gets to make a living selling his memorabilia, autographs.
See many old stars have faded in people’s memory and have no market for their autographs, heck after 30 years Pete is still marketable, relevant and in demand. Rose has a high Q rating, even though if your under 40 years old you probably never saw him play.
Not only that but people feel he is getting the shaft because of jealousy, personal vendettas by some writers who he wasn’t nice to decades ago, and a stupid MLB management.
I remember people held up Rizzuto from getting in because some of his fellow sportscasters hated him.
This should be a fans decision, so its more objective.
Every time he is turned down he sells more autographs and photos with people wanting to pose with Pete.
Will Pete Rose please go away now?
I liked him until he ran into Ray Fosse in the All-Star game.
Cobb NEVER beat a black groundskeeper for merely speaking to him. The long-time smear campaign against Cobb is pathetic. The allegations of racism are not verified or confirmed and have, for the most part, been made up.
The lone incidence where he went into the stands and attacked a fan (who turned out to be handicapped) he was not punished because of witness statements proving the extreme extent of abuse the fan had been heaping on Cobb all game long. Opposing players even said they would have throttled the guy long before Cobb did had he been abusing them in such a manner. Plus, when Cobb realized that the loud mouth had no hands, he stopped hitting him and apologized.
Shoeless Joe and the other seven players not only had due process, they were not indicted by a grand jury when the case was presented.
IMHO this is as much about Rose’s sustained multi-decade lie as it is about the offense itself.
I met him (as a young man) down here in South Florida during spring training.
He was a class act, compared to snobs like Reggie Jackson, who I also met.
Whether Pete Rose gambled on baseball couldn't be more irrelevant to me. What he did on and off the field during his playing career is what matters.
There will be plenty of haters, who have never met the man, that will insist on keeping Pete down, and out of the Hall of Fame.
That will never be anything more that petty sour grapes.
The Baseball Hall of Fame is a joke without Pete Rose in it. All time hit leader in baseball history...
Killers, rapists, traitors have served less time than Rose.
Exactly what I think. I haven’t paid attention to baseball since the Big Red Machine retired or got sold off. Louisville Slugger Bat co. has a tribute to Rose if I remember correctly. I really enjoyed baseball back in the Rose Era.
Sorry Dog but I’m from Florida. What is baseball?
When they started “Designated Hitters” I stopped caring.
That could be true too.
Baseball is ENTERTAINMENT. Pete Rose is entertainment. Seems the industry would want entertainers like Rose.
Hell, drug abusers and sexual predators are playing in the MLB.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but he did this as manager, right? Fine . . . let him in as a player. He was one of the best that ever played.
