Stumbo needs a good slap
Kentucky New Era ^ | 12/11/2015 | Eli Pace

Shortly after Kentucky House Speaker Greg Stumbo learned of Rep. John Tilley accepting Gov. Matt Bevin’s offer to become secretary of the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet, Stumbo charged the Hopkinsville lawmaker with delivering “a slap in the face to representative democracy and to those who elected (him).”

Funny, I didn’t feel the sting. And here in Western Kentucky — where I am a registered Democrat and Stumbo is not — I find myself more annoyed with him trying to put words into my mouth than I am with anything Tilley has done.

I do, however, wish Mr. Stumbo would consider letting someone slap some sense into him. I don’t promote violence, but since he suggested it, I’ll offer up that someone needs to do it before he does further damage to the party he seems so hard to be trying to save.

Ever since Mr. Bevin won the right to occupy the governor’s office for the next four years, Stumbo has been reckless with his remarks. Some might argue it’s been happening even before that. They likely remember his election-night meltdown, when his the-sun-will-rise-tomorrow speech went awry and devolved into a pitiful display of, well, I don’t know what he was trying to say.

But on that night, Stumbo embarrassed himself and his party...

Because, as Stumbo said, “Mary did not ride an elephant into Bethlehem” the night Jesus was born.

If you haven’t seen the speech, I wouldn’t recommend it. Still, it lives in Internet infamy. Don’t believe me? Go to Youtube and type “Greg Stumbo” into the search bar. Somewhere between the “um” and the “bo,” up pop the suggestions: speech, rant, election night, meltdown, Kentucky, 2015. That about nails it.

Recommend reading the whole thing - well worth it.

Stumbo is in meltdown. He might not even be the speaker come January - either losing the majority by attrition or party switches or his caucus might actually have the sense to remove him from the position.

It’s odd the legislature has not flipped already. Then again, things take time to change.

Thanks for keeping us updated. Never a dull day of politics in KY with Bevin, Stumbo, McConnell, Rand Paul, etc.

I gave a small donation to Bevin, but didn’t think he had a chance after losing so badly to McConnell. It was a great victory.

He needs about 50 kicks straight in the nads.

When he loses his gavel, I hope he cries like a kid on the playground when his mommy makes him share his toys with his brother.
