Tatiana Duva-Rodriguez thought she was doing the right thing when she pulled out her pistol and fired at a pair of shoplifters as they fled from a Home Depot near Detroit.
She wasn't, at least in the eyes of the law.
On Wednesday, a Michigan judge sentenced Duva-Rodriguez to 18 months of probation and stripped the 46-year-old of her concealed gun permit.
Duva-Rodriguez didn't manage to stop the shoplifters when she rattled off several rounds outside an Auburn Hills Home Depot on Oct. 6, although she did flatten one of their tires.
~snip~
Duva-Rodriguez did not contest the charge in court, but she was hardly contrite.
"I tried to help," she told WJBK after her sentencing on Wednesday, before wryly adding: "And I learned my lesson that I will never help anybody again."

Good riddance.
Doesn’t sound like she studied enough, so an F is appropriate.
That's not how you do it. Don't get your firearms training from Hollywood.
I want more information, since this is being disseminated by a leftist rag, who will disparage ANY citizen using or even owning a gun.
Bad shoot, obsiously. It’s proper that she was prosecuted.
Unfortunately it sounds like she didn’t learn anything.
Idiot with gun = Liberal’s best friend
What a cynic.../S
Guess I’ve been working a lot, never heard about this.
And there's the problem right there. Once they turn and run, the "threat" is over and you cannot shoot.
Now, about shooting at shoplifters where no one's life or safety is in jeopardy ............
I guess the silver lining is that, because she hasn't learned anything, she won't be trying to "help" anymore.
Would you be OK if she had killed the shoplifters?
Duva-Rodriguez told detectives that she, a Home Depot employee and one of her employees were loading drywall into her truck when the incident began. She heard a scream from a Home Depot employee and saw other employees standing at the door facing the parking lot. She said the employees were not chasing the suspect but were screaming âhelpâ and âstopâ from the vestibule, the report states.
She also yelled âstopâ at the suspect and watched him load the stolen items into the vehicle. She jumped out of the truck bed and walked to the center of the parking lot lane, unholstered her gun and held it in a low, ready stance while standing in front of the suspectsâ vehicle.
The vehicle stopped and both occupants put their hands up. They were talking to each other inside the vehicle, but Duva-Rodriguez could not hear what they were saying. They lowered their hands and drove off. Duva-Rodriguez stepped to the side as the vehicle swerved around her and fired two rounds, and she was certain she hit the tire at least once because she heard air escaping.
âShe was not sure where the second round hit, but believed she may have hit the tire with both rounds,â the report states.
âTatiana Duva-Rodriguez admittedly stated ... that she was told during her (concealed pistol license) class that she cannot brandish or discharge her firearm unless she is in fear of her life or anotherâs life,â the report states.
âTatiana stated that she was not sure why she pulled her firearm out, but wanted to help.â
That also depends on the State. Her actions in TX would have been legal.
“Would you be OK if she had killed the shoplifters?”
Interesting question. What would you allow someone to come into your home and steal?
At least she didn’t saddle up and give chase.
She attempted to shoot the tires of the escape vehicle to keep the shoplifters from escaping the store security officer.
That's certainly a crime deterrent!
STOP, or I'll shoot! Oh the hell with it ... BANG!
The lesson she should have learned...
