I was discussing this - highly hypothetical and speculative - with friends on Facebook last night. The thing that jumps out at me about this evolving story is the role Tashfeen Malik, Syed Farouk's wife and co-assailant. Female jihadis are not unknown but they are not common and not the norm. Everything we know - or believe we know - about the attack is that Malik was not along for the ride in this massacre, either literally or figuratively. She was a full participant in the attack. Indeed, according to several reports, during the final shoot-out she was the one firing while Farouk drove.
Everything we know about Farouk is that until the last couple years he was an entirely unexceptional character - no sign of radicalism or really anything special. As I said, female jihadis are not common. Given what happened yesterday, it seems far more likely that Malik arrived in the US as a convinced jihadist rather than becoming one under Farouk's influence in the relatively short time she lived in the United States. Especially when you consider that the vast majority of women who come under the influence on jihadist extremism become supporters of male attackers rather than attackers themselves.
Put more simply, what are the odds that of all the women living in Saudi Arabia in 2013, Farouk would have began a relationship and married one of the very small subset of women who not only subscribed to radical jihadist politics but was one prepared to participate in what amounted to a suicide mission? I'd say those are long odds.
Indeed this morning we have the first reports that either just before or just after the attacks, Malik made a pledge to ISIS leader al-Baghdadi on social media. The following is not news or reporting. It is caveated speculation based on the shreds of evidence we now have: but it seems likely to me that she was the channel of radicalization for her husband or at least the catalyst maintaining it from initial interest to its final, bloody crescendo on Wednesday. Indeed, I'm curious whether, having reached out to radical elements abroad, Farouk wasn't matched together with Malik either to keep him on his track of radicalization or to get her into the United States or perhaps both.
At first I didn’t think there was a third because all these things produce confusion as to how many there were and the victims tend to over estimate if the shooters were moving around. Then it became apparent that ALL those who were on the receiving of Frook’s benevolence claim there were three and there did not seem to be any confusion. Then there was the police report of a third jumping and running from the SUV and being captured. Then there was a quickie saying that the captive was of no consequence then nothing. That all leads me to believe there was, in fact, a third and that he is sequestered and being examined by the FBI. If he freely gives up all the information they seek we will hear about him again. If it is necessary to use legally unapproved methods then we will hear nothing further of him.
Tashfeen Malik (King) is a nom de guerre for a Muslim Jihadist from the annals of Muslim history. As he is known to Muslims “Tashfeen Malik Al-Muahideen”, in English: Tafhseen King of the Unitarians (Muslims) and the conquerer of the west.
The history stems from when Yusuf ibn Tashfin led the Muslim forces in the Battle of Zallaqa/Sagrajas. He came to Andalusia (Spain)from Morocco to help the Muslims fight against Alfonso VI, eventually achieving victory and allowing the Muslims to remain in Spain for centuries.
The battle has been symbolic for Muslim victory against the Christians.

This is the point that so many refuse to believe. It’s just real, authentic Islam. I have a Muslim neighbor who is muslim in name only- she was born in Egypt- and she knows that the real Muslims who take the religion seriously would kill her as an infidel.

Yes, saw that here yesterday. If this is known in the Muslim world but we still gave her a Visa when she returned with him, it shows how poor this supposed vetting process is with immigrants let alone refugees with no history.

Bernard Lewis wrote some excellent books, and was widely regarded as the most knowledgeable and articulate expert on Islam in the western world.
In one of his books, he goes out of his way to stress that even though Americans and many Europeans don’t have a grasp of their own history (and even if they do, it isn’t inculcated into the fabric of our culture) Muslims very much know their own history (or at least a version that someone wants them to know) and it figures into the everyday fabric of their lives.
When a muslim “leader” (whatever that means) makes a public announcement referencing the name of some historical figure from an event in 680 AD, we roll our eyes, but muslims all understand the reference and it resonates with them.
None of what you posted is happenstance. The woman’s mother didn’t just pick it out of a list of names such as “Susan” or “Jane”.
She gets to be with her husband and the 72 virgins. Think she gets the raw end of this deal.

A cellphone Ms. Malik had with her on Wednesday had almost nothing on it — no social media apps or encrypted apps — leading investigators to suspect that it might have been a “burner phone,†meant to be used and discarded, the officials said.
Our immigrant vetting works just as good as our TSA frisking does at keeping fake bombs and gu s off of planes.
