Mexico’s national oil company launched its first gasoline station outside of the country’s borders on Thursday in Houston, the first of several stations planned for the city.
After Mexico opened its borders to foreign investment in the country’s oil fields in 2014, state-owned Petróleos Mexicanos, know as Pemex, has started to test its brand strength by competing in the U.S., with that effort beginning in Houston, said José Manuel Carrera Panizzo, the company’s chief of alliances and new business development.
“We want to be put to the toughest test,†Carrera said of the competitive Texas gasoline market. “We’re trying to bring Mexico closer to American consumers.â€
“In terms of historic importance, it’s the first time Pemex puts a gas station outside the Mexican borders,†he said. “We’re very excited.â€
Carrera said Pemex is initially opening just five U.S. stations as a pilot test for the brand, but may eventually expand further. The other four gas station openings are all in the Houston area — three in Southeast Houston and one in West Houston.
The first gas station that opened Thursday is on the 7900 block of Park Place Boulevard. Carrera said Pemex is specifically marketing to Mexican nationals and Hispanic consumers.
The gas station includes a taco shack in the convenience store, but the gasoline is U.S.-produced and all the other convenience store items are standard American fare.
Sylvester Turner, in his recent mayoral debate on local TV, declared that Houston is not a sanctuary city. So guess we won’t be seeing too many Pemex stations there. LOL.
Seems to me like it would be a good place to check for illegals and ship them back to Mexico.
Are you sure about that? It was my understanding that Valero was 100% US oil, along w/ Marathon.
Per wikipedia the Venezuelan oil company has an agreement with San Antonio based Valero “for branding purposes”.
IOW, hiding behind a name change. In my home town there was a Citgo. One day, all of a sudden it became a Valero station. I asked the clerk if they got bought out. The answer: “no, just a new name”.

The company has its headquarters in the Energy Corridor area of Houston, Texas.
Valero is a Texas company and not associated with Citgo or PDSVA.

Citgo, which is all over this part of the country, is owned by the Communist Government of Venezuela.
No one makes money on gasoline. It is the convenience store attached to it where the margin comes in. Have a good niche product and you are set. Some of the Valero convenience stores in South Texas have taco shops that are actually pretty good.
It may or may not be true about the citgo/valero connection. Further internet research (at least for me) has muddied the waters further. Some are saying yes, some are saying no. Debbie Schlussels site has a post indicating a indirect connection. Others deny any connection. Anecdotally, I do recall that virtually overnight all the citgos disappeared and Valeros popped up in their place.

Do they have “service attendants” on each pump trying to make you pay more per litter or gallon? does the diesel solidify in certain seasons?
