It does look like they were planning something much bigger. Probably got mad at the holiday party, decided he would show them as he had could do so much, and prematurely attacked the party then went home to regroup and attack somewhere else.
So the media will call it workplace violence - imagine if the true plan with all the pipe bombs and other armament had been used.
