Dump Trump: Top Conservatives Say They Couldn’t Support Trump As Nominee [Kristol, Medved]
Daily Caller ^ | Dec 1 2015 | Jamie Weinstein

Posted on 12/01/2015 6:34:31 PM PST by WilliamIII

If Donald Trump wins the Republican nomination, some of the most prominent conservative voices in the country say they would find it difficult, if not impossible, to support him.

Trump has sparred with many of America’s most noted conservative opinion makers over the course of his campaign, calling them “losers” and “idiots” on Twitter when they criticize him in columns and on television for what they perceive as his “clown[ish]” behavior, history of supporting liberal positions and demagoguery. But as it becomes increasingly evident the real estate billionaire actually has a real shot of winning the nomination, some are outright declaring that they wouldn’t support Trump as the nominee, even against Hillary Clinton.

“Couldn’t vote for Trump, couldn’t vote for Hillary,” Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol told The Daily Caller in an email.

“Would have to find a good conservative to run as an independent whom I could vote for,” he added, before presumably joking: “Or will have to run myself!”

Conservative radio talk show host Michael Medved said he has begun to question whether he could support Trump as the Republican nominee.

I’ll leave aside your assertion that Trump’s not a conservative for now. It’s been discussed and addressed on this forum exhaustively. As far as your assertion that Trump’s an opportunist, what exactly do you mean?

The general definition of an opportunist is one who takes advantage of circumstances to advance a personal agenda. So you’re implying that his stated reasons for running are false? Are you implying that he’s lying about what he would do as President in regards to his positions on immigration, trade, tax reform, foreign policy, reduction of government debt, and improving the economy? This is all a ruse? To what end? Please explain. An anxious world awaits.

Medved convinced me he is intellectually dishonest a few months ago when he was discussing Anchor Babies. He repeatedly stated categorically that the 14th Amendment says that any person born on U.S. soil is a citizen. He did not quote the Amendment once—and never the words “...and subject to the jurisdiction thereof...”

About as intellectually honest as Bill O’Reilly.

Does anyone pay attention to these two anymore? I cannot believe Medved is still on the radio, and Kristol is almost comical in his arm-chair demeanor.

These are not conservatives. Same kind if people said they couldn’t support Reagan because he was a lightweight actor...and divorced. Oh shock!

There's enough "principled conservatives" here that would rather see Hillary than Trump because they refuse to "compromise" no matter how useful our guy could be - I get the feeling that some of them revel in agony and hope she does get in "just to prove how right they are"...

Now for a short public service announcement to all on FR:
I prefer Cruz and my money goes to his campaign, hence the Cruz link. If you like someone else, donate to him/her (find your own link to do it) and if you use FR and don't donate, then please don't complain about the welfare leeches or those who have Obama Phones because, functionally, you are no different than any other FReeloader

PS - If you are one of those who cannot afford even a small donation to FR or a candidate, God Bless and happy FReeping!.....

GO CRUZ!! Keep it up Trump!!

Donate to FR

Donate to Cruz

Donate to FR

Once again, “what goes around, comes around”.

Four years ago many conservatives, myself included, swore we would never support Romney. Yet, when the choice was Romney or Obama, we had no option but to oppose Obama, tacitly supporting Romney.

Now, the roles are reversed. The people are fed up with politics as usual: screw the people & enrich the elites. The people are selecting an outsider with no connections to the ruling class.

So, “prominent conservative voices” intend to remain silent after Trump is nominated? Will they just sit this election out? Do they get paid when silent? Or will they support Hillary, while simultaneously burning their conservative credentials forever?

Neither option seems to be career enhancing.

You’re probably right. We saw the same thing happen in ‘64. Back then, we got the murderous old buffoon LBJ in a historic landslide. Now we have the murderous shrew Hillary getting set to ride her supposed female parts to another landslide (maybe), all because of the “principled ones”. Anyone who would betray the country just to stroke their egos is pretty unprincipled, IMO, probably more like traitorous.

I had a friend who was a swell guy as long as I agreed with every single thing he said. One day he whined about the company he retired from not "caring about him" after he retired. When I pointed out that in the normal world a company doesn't keep "taking care of you" after you retire he blew up, called me terrible things on FB and defriended me.

Trump seems a little like that guy.

If Trump goes on to win the GOP Nomonation and Medved announces on his radio show that he still won’t support Trump, that would all but end Medved’s nationally syndicated show. Most stations would dump him quick if he didn’t get behind Trump after he won the nomination or face a listener revolt if they didn’t dump him.

Oh for the days of a Hucklebee or Romney, those candidates fired him up.

If Medved could get Hubert Humphrey back on the ticket he would know true bliss.

I'm with you. We need to do everything we can to get the most conservative folks on the ballots and then be able to discern the ramifications of "teaching the establishment a lesson" to the faster downfall of the Nation that used to stand proud above all others.

I truly don't understand why people can't see the real danger that electing Hillary represents. For all that Donald Trump may or may not be, I'll take him a country mile over Hillary. Same with Cruz, for all the bad things the elites and media say about him, he's head and shoulders above Hillary. Obama is basically an idiot, an empty-suit goofball who spouts Marxist rhetoric but is otherwise a dope. Bernie Sanders touts his “democratic socialism” but is in fact a tired old ‘60s coot who writes dirty stories about women secretly wanting to be raped (War on Women, anyone?). But Hillary is the real deal, a dyed-in-the-wool Marxist who worshiped the ground Alinsky walked on. The GOP better wake up, elite or not, and realize that our primary task is to keep Hillary out of the ultimate hall of power. Why the so-called party leaders would betray the Founders and the faith of the fathers to elect a murderous lying shrew simply to spite conservative candidates is something I will never understand.
