In a surprising comment, Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier is encouraging ordinary citizens to subdue or even kill active gunmen if they can as the "best option for saving lives before police can get there."
During an interview Sunday on CBS' "60 Minutes," Chief Lanier was asked what should people do if they are in the vicinity of an active shooter like the ones who terrorized Paris on Nov. 13, The Washington Examiner reported.
"Your options are run, hide, or fight," the D.C. police chief said. "If you're in a position to try and take the gunman down, to take the gunman out, it's the best option for saving lives before police can get there."
The District for decades had outlawed handguns until the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the ban in 2008. Since then, city leaders have enacted restrictive laws that are still being challenged in court by gun owners and pro-gun activists.

Not only no, but Hell NO!
Fight with whatever you have, and give it all you got, because you are dead if you wind up in one of these situations anyway.
However, the enemy is getting even better at their craft, and in Paris, for example, attacked from elevated positions with AKs. You aren't going to be able to rush that nor smack them over the head with a vase or frisbee your dinner plate at them while you move in with your steak knife--you really could use something that allows you to participate in a meaningful fashion at range. A pistol is not ideal (a rifle with optics is preferable), but would sure help, especially if a bunch of people had them on hand to fight back with.
I hate to tell her we are not about to try to fight an AK 47 with a .40 cal and a Keltec PMR30 handgun. We will be beating feet out of there maybe throwing a little shade as we go. :-)
Oh yes, you are correct. I had forgotten about that episode !
Lanier has supported every effort to limit DC residents civil rights and the article does not necessarily indicate the use of a firearm. Perhaps she means to overwhelm the shooters with love, understanding and an apology.
Guess you couldn’t figure out it was directed at the D.C. establishment.
I don't see that. As I noted in post 21, I think most posters are commenting from the disconnect between a police chief requesting the public take down an active gunman on the one hand, and completely disarming law abiding citizens on the other. I did note a post or two later that maybe she was addressing the citys gangbangers, who are armed.
At the Paris theater...the gunmen were up in the balcony shooting down at the audience.
Seems to me no one had the presence of mind to tun the lights out...maybe also activate the fire sprinklers...would have enabled a few to escape.
Tweet a hashtag bout the perp. That will teach him.
