In a surprising comment, Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier is encouraging ordinary citizens to subdue or even kill active gunmen if they can as the "best option for saving lives before police can get there."
During an interview Sunday on CBS' "60 Minutes," Chief Lanier was asked what should people do if they are in the vicinity of an active shooter like the ones who terrorized Paris on Nov. 13, The Washington Examiner reported.
"Your options are run, hide, or fight," the D.C. police chief said. "If you're in a position to try and take the gunman down, to take the gunman out, it's the best option for saving lives before police can get there."
The District for decades had outlawed handguns until the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the ban in 2008. Since then, city leaders have enacted restrictive laws that are still being challenged in court by gun owners and pro-gun activists.

What a funny comment from Chief Cathy. Spent a couple weeks camping in Virginia in October. Went to DC twice, both times I went to DC I had to make other arrangements for my handguns, which I could legally carry in Virginia and West Virginia. Even got turned down for parking at a federally run garage, had a hatchet in my truck. No big deal, but my guess if I'd have carried it, I'd have been arrested. Accidentally entered the Holocaust Museum with a pocket knife in my camera bag with a 3 1/2 inch blade, which was confiscated. My choice, didn't want to walk it back to the private garage.
And Chief Cathy wants this law abiding citizen to take down an active gunman. With what, a bar of soap in my sock?
Better idea: Do away with the unconstitutional practice of requiring permits.
Does this idiot not realize DC has one of the nation’s strictest gun laws???

HOWEVER (better than BUT)....
I don’t know if it changed but it wasn’t all that long ago where say a cop from Maryland or Virginia was NOT ALLOWED to carry in DC...the excuse being there were enough agencies in DC to handle things and probably weren’t there in an ‘official status’ .... Kind of hard to obey ALL the laws when your jurisdiction tells you to carry 24/7 and local governments ban carry.

Apologies for my last post, on reconsideration I realize Chief Cathy must have been addressing DC’s gangbanger population, not law abiding gunowners like me who follow the law, even in DC. Though I acknowledge I usually avoid places like that.

Why come out with this statement if citizens cannot carry?

Tough to do when, as Emily Miller has pointed out, only 45 permits have been issued in DC over the past year.
Some common sense at last. You don’t have to be armed to fight back. You simply have to be ready, by any means, to seize the moment and counter attack immediately.
Never let them get you in their power. Fight back because even if you don’t resist, you’re going to die..and possibly much more unpleasantly than getting mowed down while fighting back.
