Donald Trump's rhetoric since the Paris terrorist attacks appears to have helped him with GOP primary voters, according to most polls. But Republican insiders are concerned that his words could come back to haunt the party as it seeks to appeal to a broader audience.
In recent days, Trump has suggested that the United States could have "no choice" but to close mosques. Even more controversially, he told an NBC News reporter he would "certainly" implement a system to register and track Muslims, though it was unclear whether he was referring to new immigrants or all Muslims on American soil.
"Long term, that is not something we will do or should do," said GOP strategist Ed Rollins, who has worked for the past presidential campaigns of Republicans including former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, in 2008, and former Rep. Michele Bachmann (Minn.) in 2012. Asked about the implications of such rhetoric for the GOP at large, Rollins suggested that Trump's candidacy from the beginning has posed problems.
"There is a lot of danger in some of the things that Trump has said, for a party that needs to reach out to Hispanics, needs to reach out to young voters, needs to reach out to women. Some of the rhetoric will be put back into play in the fall, and it is not positive," he said.
Those are the dangers that recently elected Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) seemed to be trying to guard against when he said that House legislation to halt Syrian refugees from entering the United States would "not have a religious test, only a security test."

GOP fears Trump
There. Fixed it.
“GOP fears”
True dat.
So then you’re familiar with what I’m talking about.
Let’s see, the GOP is worried about Trump’s comments hurting the party.
But when Rubio one ups Trump and says he wouldn’t limit the shut downs to just mosques, he’s just peachy.
“So how much money is the GOPe taking from the Saudis, anyway?”
Start with McCain and Graham.
With the holidays coming, this is all going to go down the memory hole.
Rollins - Loser that no one needs to listen to.
But, of course, the gopE has ALWAYS been concerned with what Trump says. Because every time he says something his numbers go up. And that concerns them deeply.
Every time the GOP tries to appeal to the broader audience, they lose.
When you’re around republican insiders be careful not to step in it.
F the GOP.....F the Rinos.....Go Trump
“”There is a lot of danger in some of the things that Trump has said, for a party that needs to reach out to Hispanics....”
You know, I’m getting fed up with this crap. I’ve come to believe that the GOPe Hispanic delusion is actually a mechanism to explain why they don’t reach out to working class whites, a much more fruitful field for votes and for power.
Only working class whites’ interests are opposed to the interests of the GOPe, so they won’t do that.
The Irony of it all. Liberals using the constitution to slam Trump when the biggest constitutional flim-flam man is in the White House.
Could hurt what, the quiet surrounding the elephant in the room?
GOP fears Muslims could hurt
After all, Muslims have a track record of hurting people...
Exactly. Trump can’t do any worse than the GOP-e.
Who cares what they think. One another, that’s it.
They compared us to Iranian hardliners- and the GOPe remained silent...
They called us Teabaggers- and the GOPe remains silent...
Donald Trump speaks out about terrorists and defending the United States- and now the GOPe is upset.
If the GOPee gets the Rainbow Mosque, the Muzzie Broz in the Executive branch will likely stay (except Hussein and ValJar).
In 2008 and 2012 the GOPe ran pussies for president and got whupped by an unknown, illegitimate phony socialistic narcissist. In 2010 and 2014 they were handed a crystal clear mandate from the people and chose to ignore it in favor of the policies of an unknown, illegitimate phony socialistic narcissist. When you consistently show your intention to govern with your head permanently embedded in your anal sphincter it is time you got thrown out.
I refuse to kiss Islamic ass and the GOPe can go straight to hell.
“GOP fears”
Stop right there. That is what they do, 24/7/365
They are perpetually afraid.
