For those keeping score, over the last few months, Senate Democrats have used the filibuster -- which they railed against and eroded while in the majority -- to block a bill to pay our troops, to prevent any vote on President Obama's reckless Iran deal, to hold up funding for the VA, and to obstruct legislation helping victims of human trafficking because it didn't spend taxpayer dollars on abortions. (One can only hope the NRSC is keeping track of these votes for future attack ads). Harry's crew is angling to add another notch in their obstructionist belt, with Reid vowing to filibuster a post-Paris bill designed to beef up vetting protocols for Syrian refugees -- which passed the House with a veto-proof majority, with the help of nearly 50 Democrats. The Senate Minority leader sounded open to the legislation earlier in the week, but once Obama dropped a veto threat, Reid did what Reid always does. Must protect The Precious:
Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid (Nev.) says a House bill suspending the resettlement of Syrian refugees, slated for action Thursday, will not make it to President Obama's desk. Reid said at a press conference that Democrats will block the legislation that requires the secretary of Homeland Security to affirm to Congress that every refugee being admitted is not a security threat..."The problem is not with refugees," Reid said. "I don't think we'll be dealing with it over here." When asked about the prospect of Obama vetoing the legislation, Reid said, "Don't worry, it won't get passed. Next question?â House Republican leaders expect the bill to receive yes votes from as many as 50 Democrats in the lower chamber. They warned Democrats will pay the price politically next year if they block it. "We'll crucify them," said a senior House GOP aide.
Sen. Dianne Feinstein (Calif.), the ranking Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, on Thursday will introduce legislation broadening the debate to visa waivers granted to European citizens traveling to the United States. The legislation, co-sponsored by Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), would block waivers for European citizens who spent time in Syria or Iraq in the past five years. âLetâs say France has had 2000 people leave to go and fight [in Syria.] Theyâre a visa waiver country so the people come back to France and then they come into the United States. The bill we would propose would strictly limit that,â she said after attending a classified briefing with senior administration officials Wednesday evening. She added the legislation would tighten the fingerprinting requirements for visitors who qualify for visa waivers. âCurrently, in most cases, the fingerprints are checked after they arrive in the United States. They should be done before,â said Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (Ill.). While Republicans have focused on the 10,000 refugees from Syria whom President Obama wants to resettle domestically, Democrats argue they are already subject to rigorous vetting. They say visa waivers pose a greater security threat, noting several of the Paris attackers were French or Belgian citizens who were believed to have visited Syria.
Fmr. head of Defense Intel on dire 2012 ISIS report: "It was disregarded by the WH... it didn't meet the narrative." https://t.co/vdpnya8rhK— Willie Geist (@WillieGeist) November 19, 2015
I dare him to do it on a treadmill.
Guido you need to go pay someone another “visit”. He’s getting a little uppity and mouthy again. Probably dementia.
Yes, but we're always complaining that the GOP caves rather than fight Obama. At least this makes Obama and Reid and their cronies "own" the Syrian fake refugees.
Well, you can take comfort in that as our people are slaughtered.
At least you'll be able to say "I'm glad I voted GOP".
Yeah, right, you really know me. I'll bet if there was no vote and the GOP did nothing you'd be the biggest whiner on the board.
Well, so much for majority rule......”No Lips” McConnell must be on vacation or else I just KNOW he would be in there fighting that smarmy Reid like gang-busters..(sarc)
The media decides ownership and it never goes to the Leftists unless there can be some false good manufactured out of it.
The Left/media condemn and attack and destroy...and we are left with McConnell and now Ryan speechlessly holding their puds.
Democrat Party OWNS the coming ISIS terror attack on US soil.
Apparently you have not noticed that there is an election coming up. The bolder GOP candidates (Trump and Cruz) can and will certainly make sure that people know who wanted the Syrians to come in to the USA. I'd like to see the GOP actually do something to obstruct Obama, but during an election year, they at least made a show of being on the right side of the issue.
They do indeed.
Reid: Oh, You Bet We’ll Filibuster That Bipartisan Syrian Refugees Bill
Someone needs to ask this crook just how many Americans he is going to sacrifice to his Muslim mutt boss.
Who else? Nancy Piglosi, Leahy
Yes the next election.
That’s always the one to cure all our ills.
Just get these one-worlders in the Senate on the record.
Buckwheat will veto it anyway. Once the sanctuary cities are reeling from sudden jihad syndrome the records will show who brought their destruction down upon them.
Sadly some in our nation need to learn the hard way.
Pray for the innocents who had nothing to do with this coming nightmare.
I guess my point was, “real” Republucans wouldn’t hesitate to change the filibuster rules in the face of a national security issue. Nobody has the courage except democrats when it suits their purposes. We couldn’t filibuster Obamacare, or at least chose not to. Yes there’s Cruz and others that speak out, but with a Senate majority the “rest” if them, the MAJORITY of them, are mostly silent.
You are exactly right..well stated..it is so frustrating. They are a disgrace, every one of them, R and D alike.
Time for Mitch to suspend the filibuster just like Harry did.
He should have done that as soon as he became majority leader. If he doesn’t then he needs to forced to resign, like Boehner was
Agreed.
