INDIANAPOLIS - Several news outlets are reporting that a family of Syrian refugees bound for Indianapolis was sent to another state after Gov. Mike Pence's announcement this week that he was suspending plans to settle refugees in Indiana.
USA Today reports that the family was sent to New Haven, Connecticut instead. The New York Times also covered the story. Both outlets report that the family waited for three years in Jordan before being allowed to come to the United States.
It is the first reported incident where a family was redirected after over two-dozen governors declared they would not accept Syrian refugees in their respective states.
USA Today reports that a second family due to arrive in December is also being turned away.
The controversy follows revelations that one of the terrorist suspects in last week's deadly attacks in Paris traveled with Syrian refugees through Greece. President Obama has pledged for the United States to accept 10,000 refugees in 2016.
Meantime, House Speaker Paul Ryan says a Republican bill the chamber plans to vote on this week won't limit Syrian and Iraqi refugees admitted to this country based on their religions.
The Wisconsin Republican's description of the legislation contrasted with remarks by some GOP presidential candidates. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz have said preference should be given to Christians.
Ryan said that under the House bill, Syrian and Iraqi refugees could only be admitted to the U.S. if intelligence and law enforcement officials can certify that they won't be a security threat.
He says such precautions are common sense and the government's obligation to American citizens.
Most Democrats have defended current screening procedures, though some have called for a pause since last week's terrorist attacks in Paris.
If you had to be rerouted after so many people didn’t want you, would you take your wife and children there? No, of course not. Right there is very telling what their intention is. What’s this family made of, 1 dad, 6 sons and 14 adult male cousins?
Not punished enough for manipulating voting machines. Hubby’s vote was flipped a few weeks ago in Texas.
I’m sorry but that’s disgusting.
Did he catch it. Report to state SoS Ours decertified the machines before the 2012 Election
Morons in Ct. deserve this.
