Anonymous claims it has eliminated 5,500 ISIS Twitter accounts

The hacking group Anonymous said Tuesday it has taken down 5,500 Twitter accounts tied to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

The loosely affiliated collective recently declared cyber war on ISIS in the wake of Friday’s terror attacks on Paris that claimed more than 120 lives.

On Tuesday morning, “OpParis,” the team orchestrating the digital assault on ISIS, tweeted, “We report that more than 5500 Twitter account of #ISIS are now #down! #OpParis #Anonymous #ExpectUs.”

Several hours later, OpParis tweeted a link to other ISIS targets, declaring “#ISIS tries to stop us, but we’re smarter.”

The link to a post on the text-sharing site Pastebin contained the Web addresses of alleged ISIS-affiliated websites, dark Web pages, Twitter accounts, Tumblr accounts, Facebook pages and Web servers.

While Anonymous lacks any hierarchy, the group has frequently turned its hacking skills on terrorist groups.

In the wake of the ISIS attacks on the satirical French newspaper Charlie Hebdo in January, Anonymous declared a similar campaign to expunge the online tools ISIS was using to recruit members, disseminate propaganda and plan attacks.

The hackers ended up posting hundreds of social media accounts and websites that it claimed were affiliated with the jihadist group. It also launched a series of denial-of-service attacks on ISIS sites, flooding the pages with phony traffic to disable them. . .

Does this help or hurt intelligence gathering efforts?

So, it’s easy enough to crate a new account.

Oddly enough, this might be counterproductive. More honeypots are needed. Maybe we will make them :)

Everyone needs to see this guy’s blog. He’s a ‘good’ hacker and he’s been fighting jihadis onlime for years. It’s worth the read. He says don’t fall for it.

Highly unlikely these evil goat humpers can compete with the white hat hackers.

The question is:

WHY THE HELL IS OBAMA ALLOWING THESE ACCOUNTS TO STAY UP?

Someone posted on Facebook that a “friend” has been collecting anti-Muslim comments and handing them over to Muslim organizations. She was “defriended,” and several other people commented that they had defriended her too.

Just a word to be careful when someone you never heard of wants to be a “friend.”

No probs. He is a decent, patriotic guy and knows what the heck is going on. I go straight to his Twitter feed whenever we have a hacking attempt or terrorist attack. He gets intel waaaaay before most. Knew things about the Boston Bombers weeks before it came out in MSM.

It’s really pathetic hackers had to do this and not the Twits at Twitter.

Or the alphabet soup of agencies of the US government.
It's as if the NSA, CIA, others I don't even know about can't do this? Or just won't? ...Or aren't allowed to?

Thanks, that confirms my suspicion.
Anonymous is just interfering with legitimate efforts.

Somehow I don’t think these were the 72 virgins that ISIS had in mind when they declared their war...

If they didn’t trace them back to the source, it may have done no good.

And it was said yesterday that social media traffic is monitored to help identify complicity and timing of attacks. Good for you or bad for you Anonymous?
