In 1997 when I was in Wuhan for grad school the PRC made conciliatory gestures to the Uighur terrorist who’d been causing trouble in Western China agitating for their own 3rd World Islamic slum. The PRC arranged a “peace conference” and got most of the Uighur leaders in one room and then machine-gunned them. Literally they locked the doors and shot everyone in the building. For some reason that didn’t make the international papers. The PRC killed over 1500 Islamic separatist in 10 minutes.
The PLA may be a paper tiger but it is good enough and mean enough to liquidate terrorist.
It did not make me a bigger fan of the PRC.
Well, it is not hard to surmise the reason.

Invite all the leaders to a “peace conference” and machine gun them.
1,500 at once, perfectly targeted, no collateral damage, and all for the cost of small arms ammo, and some cleanup.
When I look at the cities being leveled for less impact on the enemy, while they ravage civilian populations, what initially caused me to recoil in revulsion, doesn’t seem so bad (as a tactic).
Perhaps some brutal warfare of that type will be required to halt the jihadi aggression, before they go nuclear.
